HEYZ presents 'Who Is HEYZ' EP (Deadbeats)

Actualizado: 23 abr 2021

HEYZ begins his independent work. This uniquely inspired musician, who has made a name for himself through a handful of tasty songs.

His music is unclassifiable, but it has no rival. Close your eyes and let the sensations flow.

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music?

I’m from Greensboro, North Carolina. So I got into actually producing music seriously later in life about 4 years ago when I was 25. I always was naturally gifted with music but saw myself working in music marketing or something related to it, and not as an artist myself. When I finally started producing music it clicked really quickly and took off way faster than I expected. I got signed to mau5trap about 3 months after I started producing. I quit everything I was working on to focus on music and it has been off to the races ever since.

I feel like the underground scene will continue to persist. Do you think we can go back to "normal" events and festivals?

I absolutely think we can go back to “normal” events and festivals. My social media timelines are bustling with show announcement after show announcement and it’s so great to see. Of course I want everyone to approach these events with caution as we’re still in a pandemic, but I can see the resurgence happening now. Hopefully shows and festivals continue to come back more and more and we don’t have to halt the progress again!

How is your sound evolving? What artists and genres do you enjoy mixing right now?

My sound has evolved a lot from when I started out on mau5trap. I used to produce Techno now I’m establishing myself in the Bass Music/Dubstep world. I made the switch honestly because I just have a lot more fun playing out heavy music live and really have fun producing it. I’m enjoying playing out anything in the bass music world right now that is full of energy and has that “all encompasing” sound that just swallows you. I try to dig on soundcloud to find artists I’ve never heard of and play out their stuff.

How do you feel that your music influences or impacts your listeners?

Hopefully makes them happy, or feel something at least. I think that’s all you can ask as a music producer is that your music elicits some response from the listener. I also try to make music that can pop off at a live show but also but listenable on a daily basis.

What projects are you working on right now?

Wrapping up the “Who Is HEYZ” EP and making sure it does well has been the project I’ve been working on for the majority of 2020. I’ve also been working on growing my online presence a lot and it has definitely paid off as I’ve gotten a little over 300,000 Tiktok followers in the last year. Other than that I’m ready to hop into another music writing sprint and have to finish up a remix for a really big artist by the end of next week!

How was the ‘Who Is HEYZ’ EP born? What did you want to convey with it?

I didn’t really go into the project with an exact plan for my next EP, I was just having fun writing music during quarantine and then BAM, turned around and I had a sick EP that worked well together. During quarantine I went viral on Tiktok for my comedy and brought the characters I was portraying in my videos into the branding for the EP. So “Who Is HEYZ” is all about bringing my virality on Tiktok and music together in a fun way. The music is serious while the branding is goofy as hell haha. Musically, I wanted to convey really just a great energy with the songs and also really euphoric melodic moments.

What was your production criteria?

It’s gotta bump, thump and move some rumps, you know what I’m sayin?

How would you define your sound?

I’ve always described it as “beauty and power”. I really enjoy writing beautifully euphoric moments and then meshing that with heavy drops. I think that juxtaposition is really fun for the listener. It’s hard for me to say really, I don’t directly model it after anyone I kinda just do my own thing and it comes out how it comes out haha.

What pisses you off?

When Chipotle gives me a bag of chips and I get home and they are either stale or too salty.

What makes you happy?

Miller Lite, making music, World of Warcraft, day drinking in really nice weather, cooking, BBQing in particular, old school trance music, Dubstep, Progressive House.

Do you have any final words of wisdom?

Get an air fryer. They are really great.
