INTERVIEW: Lucky Sun

Lucky Sun (aka Tom Lown) is best known for his super deep productions which have been released on labels such as Lost My Dog, UM Records, Delve Deeper Records and his own Lucky Sun Recordings. Tom released his debut album Olive Street under his Lucky Sun moniker a couple of years ago, receiving high praise from DJ Mag (5/5 *****) and a host of DJs from around the world, including Ashley Beedle, Colin Dale, Vanilla Ace, Lars Behrenroth, DJ Pippi, Sean Dimitrie and many more.

His most recent Lucky Sun album 'Balance', released in the summer of 2022, saw Tom collaborating with vocalists Alison David and Frank H Carter III, continuing his journey through summery soulful deep house, Balearic electronica and the chill out. The album received high praise from The Yorkshire Times and 48 Hills Magazine (San Francisco), as well as receiving airplay on Worldwide FM, Point Blank Radio and BBC Introducing.

Up next for winter 2022 is Balance's exciting remix album.

Tom is now proud to be published by Truelove Music.

We have had the pleasure of speaking with him and this has been the result.

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from and how did you get into music?

I’m originally from Cambridge, UK but spent most of my life in London. My music life when I started playing drums in bands from a young age, everything from jazz-funk to orchestral to indie. At the same time collecting records from the early 90’s - everything from Soul, Funk, Hip Hop and House. I ended up in New York in the early 00’s, working at a music production comapny where I learned to use all the studio kit and began to get my head around Logic.

How is your sound evolving? What artists and genres do you enjoy mixing right now?

The last few years, my sound has become more song based, with elements from either the dance floor side or more chill vibes. Artists and labels I’m digging right now are: Do It Now Recordings, Piers Kirwan, Session Victim, Tuccillo, AtJazz, Fred Everything, Jimpster and loads more. Everything that Richard Earnshaw does seems to be absolute gold.

How do you feel that your music influences or impacts its listeners?

Hopefully, makes them feel good and puts a smile on their face.

What projects are you working on right now? What can you tell us about your last job?

Right now I’m working on new material for an EP/mini album for next Spring/Summer including a collaboration with Jaidene Veda. My last release was the original album Balance which I’m really pleased with.

Has that sound changed a lot in recent years? What is your musical criteria in your last job?

I think my sound has continued but hopefully improving and sounding more accomplished as I learn all the time. Tracks on the album varied from song based deep house to more chilled and experimental sounds.

We all know that the digital revolution has affected sales, but do you think it has affected creativity?

Good question. For me, I’ll always continue to write and produce regardless of its success - I think more people will work on music alongside other things to keep their boat afloat.

Can you tell us about your present and future projects?

Current project is Remixed album of Balance - out 14th December. It features superb remixes by Alvaro Hylander, Sumsuch, AL Bradley, Tim Haze, Kanedo & Sumsuch, Ezra Collins and Hero Nougues.
