Kezokichi (Japón) lleva varios años detrás de los platos, haciendo las delicias tanto a los más experimentados como a todos aquellos que quieran sumergirse en el principado electrónico más selecto, ecléctico y mágico. Además, es un productor insaciable, capo del sello Blindetonation e inagotable explorador musical. Ha conseguido, como pocos, que la música pueda ser un modo de vida.

An almost middle aged sushi boy from Tokyo.

How and when have you got interest of the music? And electronic music?

¿Cómo y cuándo te interesó la música? ¿Y la música electrónica?

I’m from the downtown of Tokyo, which is really not as great as you would imagine but I accidentally joined a talent agency when I was 8 -13 years old. Their office was in Harajuku / Shibuya area where there used to be a lot of records stores around which I loved going to. Though at the time I mostly listened to punk music. I seriously started getting into electronic music when I was in high school. I met Mari who is the owner of Faline Tokyo and she introduced me to everyone in Fashion and Music. So even when I was 16, I was able to go to the new wave party called Vanity for free and with no iD where LCD Soundsystem, Kill The DJ, Munk, Busy P etc were playing.

Soy del centro de Tokio, que en realidad no es tan grande como te puedas imaginar, pero accidentalmente me uní a una agencia de talento cuando tenía 8-13 años. Su oficina estaba en el área de Harajuku / Shibuya donde solía haber muchas tiendas de discos alrededor de las cuales me gustaba ir. Aunque en aquella época escuchaba música punk. Más tarde empecé a entrar en la música electrónica más en serio cuando estaba en la escuela secundaria. Conocí a Mari, que es la dueña de Faline Tokyo, y allí me presentó a todo el mundo de la moda y la música. Hasta el punto de que, con 16 años, fui capaz de ir a la emblemática fiesta new wave llamada “Vanity”, de forma gratuita, y sin DNI, donde LCD Soundsystem, Kill The DJ, Munk, Busy P, etc. tocaban.

What are your musical influences?

¿Cuáles son tus influencias musicales?

Obviously, some of my biggest early influences come from the new wave parties that I went to when I was 16 and others include: cold wave, drone, post-punk Japanese synth pop. However I’m always excited to dig unknown music in any genre. I’m not picky at all!

Obviamente, algunas de mis influencias más tempranas provienen de las fiestas new wave a las que asistía cuando tenía 16 años, y otras incluyen: cold wave, drone, post-punk o synth-pop japonés. Sin embargo, siempre me entusiasma investigar música desconocida de cualquier género. ¡No soy exigente en absoluto!

How would you define your music?

¿Cómo definirías tu música?

It’s a hard one to answer. As my music influences have had a big part in the build up of my dj set. I sometimes play techno, industrial, EBM too but one rule that I go by, is that I won’t play something that is too industrial for example. It’s a bit difficult to explain in words but I try not to make my set lean too much towards one style. For example, it would have an essence of disco and cold wave but under my own rule it would always come together as one. So likewise at my label Blindetonation Records, described as Disco of the randomness, the music we release always has some element of disco in it. Another thing is that I’m always conscious not to mix pieces of music which are too similar in sound. I enjoy mixing sounds that are unusual or surprising. It wouldn’t be fun for me to play something that would be too expected and I’m sure my attitude would translate to the mood of the crowd.

Es difícil de contestar. Es verdad que mis influencias musicales han formado parte de mi educación como dj, y aunque pincho techno, industrial o EBM, nunca apuesto por un género definido. Es un poco difícil de explicar con palabras, pero trato de no hacer un conjunto demasiado marcado hacia un estilo. Por ejemplo, un set puede tener una esencia de disco y cold wave, pero bajo mi punto de vista, siempre se unirían como una sola. Por eso describo mi sello Blindetonation Records lo describo como Disco de la aleatoriedad, ya que la música que lanzamos siempre tiene algún elemento de disco en ella. Otra cosa es que siempre estoy consciente de no mezclar piezas de música que son demasiado similares en el sonido. Me gusta mezclar sonidos inusuales y sorprendentes. Para mí no es divertido crear algo demasiado previsible.

Could you describe your creative process – how do you usually go about making a track?

¿Cuál es tu proceso creativo? ¿Cómo abordas un tema? ¿Qué te inspira?

Yes, I used to make beats first then bass then lead blah blah blah. But by this method I often never made any satisfied tracks because I don’t have a lot of training in music theory.

So recently I just started to record something from my synths, noises, voices and through a few external effects, I would work with it until I get some interesting sounds or atmosphere, then I get an idea from it. I realised this way is much easier for me to create my own thing.

Solía partir de los beats y la base, pero con este método nunca he hecho ninguna pista que me satisfaga, porque no tengo mucha formación en teoría musical.

Normalmente empiezo a grabar algo con mis sintetizadores: ruidos, voces, y a través de algunos efectos, trabajo con ellos hasta que tengo algunos sonidos o atmósferas interesantes. A partir de ahí, tengo una idea de lo que quiero hacer. Con el tiempo, me di cuenta de que este métdo era mucho más fácil para mí componer.

Do you often get in the studio with clear ideas and everything well tied or leave something for improvisation and inspiration at the moment?

¿Consigues a menudo en el estudio tener las ideas claras y todo bien atado o prefieres dejar algo para la improvisación y la inspiración del momento?

Yes when I have a clear idea, I would start with that first but I often find that this approach ends up being boring. Improvisation and inspiration of the moment works for me the best.

Sí, cuando tengo una idea clara, empiezo con eso primero, pero a menudo descubro que este enfoque termina siendo aburrido. La improvisación y la inspiración son las que mejor trabajan.

Tell me about your first ever set, do you still remember it vividly?

Háblanos sobre tu primer set, ¿todavía lo recuerdas vivamente?

Yes I do. It was a New Wave Fashion party organised by Vanity at Amate-Raxi in Shibuya which was a 1 hour set main time on the second floor. Luckily I got a good response from the crowd and it made me want to dj again.

Before that, I had been making mix cd’s and giving it out but the first time to actually play in front of a crowd was nerve racking. I’m always mucking about but even these days I sometimes get nervous before I get in my flow! but it’s a good feeling. ha ha

Claro que lo hago. Recuerdo que era una fiesta de moda de la New Wave organizada por Vanity, en Amate-Raxi, en Shibuya, donde pinché durante una hora en el segundo piso. Por suerte tuve una buena respuesta de la multitud y me hizo querer ser dj de nuevo.

Antes de eso, había estado haciendo mezclas con cd’s, pero la primera vez que realmente pinché delante de una multitud, me puse muy nervioso. Siempre estoy gozándolo, ¡pero a veces me pongo nervioso antes de entrar en mi flow! Esa sí que es una gran sensación, jaja.

What are you most hungry for in life?

¿Qué es lo que más te apetece en la vida?

Beautiful house, luxury car, enough money to live the rest of my life… ha ha but that’s not the thing I want most!

I feel the happiest when people are enjoying when I’m playing music. Also when I’m working on a creative job or project that pushes my imagination.

Una hermosa casa, un coche de lujo, suficiente dinero para vivir el resto de mi vida… jaja, ¡pero eso no es lo que más quiero!

Me siento muy feliz cuando la gente está disfrutando mientras pincho música. Y también cuando trabajo en un proyecto creativo que empuja mi imaginación.

What would be your all-time ultimate venue/festival to play at?

¿Cuál sería el último lugar donde te gustaría pinchar?

If there’s a chance, I would love to play at Panorama Bar and Burning Man.

¿Cuáles son tus próximos proyectos?

For my solo side, my ep will be out on Snap Crackle & Pop this summer. I have two other projects coming up but they’re not quite ready yet so time will tell.

Como productor, próximamente estrenaré un EP en el sello Snap Crackle & Pop, para este verano. Tengo otros dos proyectos próximos, pero todavía no están listos, así que el tiempo lo dirá.
