INTERVIEW: Beneath Usual

Beneath Usual is the new project of Arnaud Levasseur, Sound engineer specialise in Mastering and Sound design at SFX Mastering studio and also the label manager of Microdrive. Created to design Deep Electronic Music with great minimalist Dub influence, this new project is really dedicate to all underground music lovers.

We have had the pleasure of interviewing Arnaud and this has been the result.

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music?

I’m born in France and started my producing career in 1998 on the psy Trance scene with several albums and single releases.

In 2010, I started to make some House music under the name of Noon and also created my first label called SFX Recordings.

It’s only in 2015 then I started Beneath Usual and in the theme time my new label Microdrive.

How is your sound evolving? What artists and genres do you enjoy mixing right now?

Well to me, it’s very important to always try to go forward and to try to find different sounds.

There are many artists who have influenced me, of course. I’m currently enjoying playing tracks by artists like

Mihai Popoviciu, Legit Trip, Reyam, Somersault, Arkady Antsyrev, Diego Krause, Elroy and many others…

How do you feel that your music influences or impacts your listeners?

Music to me is about sharing emotions, feelings and ideas. If I can give a little of that to the people who follow my work, it feels great.

What projects are you working on right now? What can you tell us about your last job?

For the music part, I’m focusing on my label Microdrive and on my main project Beneath Usual.

On the side, I’m also working as a sound engineer doing mastering and sound design services for my own studio called SFX Mastering.

Where are you and what have you been doing now?

I’m currently leaving in the south of France. I start my day by taking my kid to school then I’m back home to start my studio working day !

Has that sound changed a lot in recent years? What is your musical criteria?

When I first started to make House music back in 2010 I had this project called “Noon”

witch was after producing 15 years of Psy Trance, so it was sounded

A little more hybrid and really like I was learning this new way of groove and this new style.

Now with Beneath Usual I think I found the right balance in between House groove, deep melodies or synth combine with minimalist influences.

Do you feel safe now to play a more experimental sound?

“Experimental” sound is a little generic, it’s all depending on the the point of view.

We all know that the digital revolution has affected sales, but has it affected creativity?

I think it does influence and affect the creativity, if you look at the market, there are so many releases every day, music style are totally mix up. Too many artists are doing generic music. It's harder now to find originality but there is always exception and artists who like to make the difference.

Can you tell us what your present and future projects are?

Like I said before I’m really trying to focus on my label Microdrive, helping out new talents mix up with well establish artists trying to provide the best underground music we can. Focusing more on the quality than the quantity !
