Hi Avi Sic! How are you?

Hey, great thanks for having me.

Do you remember your first live performance? Where was it and how did it go?

I don’t remember my first live gig - it’s been a while, LOL, but I remember my first major ticket gig which was support for Public Enemy at the Congress Theatre in Chicago in 2010. That was an insane show. I did a DJ set on turntables for 5,000 hip hop fans. I got a residency from that show and went on to do support for a handful of A-list artists.

What’s your usual routine to get ready for a live show?

I like to relax and clear my head, just shut off my brain for a bit so when I get on stage I'm completely in the moment with my energy and song choices.

What do you look for in a track to add it to a live set?

I love to incorporate lesser known tracks in my sets. My strategy is 70/30. I play stuff people know to keep the audience engaged but when I do that, it’s always an exclusive edit to keep that song fresh and to set my show apart. I get sent hundreds of promos a week and I listen to most of them. If it gives me that classic “bass face” I'll play it - that applies to all genres - If I can nod my head along and want to hear more of the track I assume my audience will also. If a record touches me in any way, I'll download it.

How do you read an audience and how did you learn to do it?

I’ve always had a good read on situations and people in general, but DJing live has definitely taken that skill to the next level. I’ve been doing it for so long, I don’t even know I'm doing it when I'm performing, it just comes naturally. When you put on a show it’s not just for your own enjoyment, the audience comes first.

What’s your favorite thing about mixing live?

The energy, the excitement of the crowd, and also surprising myself. I don’t plan my sets - I have a general idea for some shows but never an exact plan - just living in the moment is my favorite thing. The adrenaline.

Can you tell us what would you say it’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your time performing live?

Be prepared for anything and know your equipment. I can’t count how many support shows I've done for major artists where they ask me questions about the equipment lol.

Which new skills or gear would you like to incorporate in the near future?

I’m learning the ins and outs of using 4 CDJS instead of 2. There’s lots of fun tricks and things you can do with acapellas, loops, etc. I always like to grow and keep challenging myself.

What piece of advice would you give to a DJ that’s starting their live performance journey?

Stay focused, be persistent and always present your best and most authentic self.
