INTERVIEW: BexX presents On To Bigger Things

Hailing from Bristol, BexX is an artist who overcame his own fear and said "I'll do it anyway", launching as a non-binary artist in 2020 with the release of "I'm Still There", "Love". Chooses You' and 'All That You Dream': featuring Lady Nade, which won plaudits on BBC Bristol's Upload Track of the Week, Trans Radio UK, Medway Pride Radio and BuzzMusic.

'On To Bigger Things' is a collection of four songs that explore vulnerability, growth, acceptance and self-love. The first single 'A Girl With Love To Share' - Feat. Svenja Behle will be released on February 18 followed by a video premiere (March 2).

We have had the pleasure of speaking with the artist and this has been the result.

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music? I'm from Bristol in the UK. I got into music when I was about 5 when I saw Marty McFly playing guitar in Back To The Future. I learned guitar by ear and wrote songs that were influenced by what I heard. I made a few albums and EPs as a teenager / early 20s but never released them. I gained a lot of experience working for other artists from my studio. And then the Pandemic hit and I made the move to focus on refining my own music. How is your sound evolving? What artists and genres do you enjoy mixing right now? I have gone through a phase of recording really big orchestral and choral sounds, recording grand piano and harp. And more recently, into more electronic synth and live-sampled sounds. I love mixing Ethnic and World styles, Chamber-Pop, Baroque-Pop, Trip-Hop and Live-Drum n Bass. How do you feel that your music influences or impacts your listeners? People have said it's like nothing they've heard before. Leaving them inspired. For me, I like the idea of drawing people into a world, telling them your story and, if I can, I'd like to reach those who need to hear that they are not alone when it comes to tackling low self-esteem and anxiety. What projects are you working on right now? What can you tell us about your last job? I'm currently releasing my 4-song debut EP about Vulnerability, Growth, Acceptance and Self-Love. The lead single is called 'A Girl With Love To Share' - featuring Berlin Artist Svenja Behle. The message is to 'Be Yourself' despite the flaws that other people may pick out about you, based on their own limiting beliefs. The song has a music video, filmed in two locations during the Pandemic. Where are you and what have you been doing now? I'm in my studio in Bristol. I'm doing a collaboration with a local artist where we will be singing a duet, on a cinematic ethnic track.

Has that sound changed a lot in recent years? What is your musical criteria? I'm all about the expression. I love unusual sounds and experimenting to merge them with a more commercial / contemporary pop sound. I don't want to stay in the same place. Do you feel safe now to play a more experimental sound? Yes. And, with each new release, I want to get more and more experimental. We all know that the digital revolution has affected sales, but has it affected creativity? There are a lot more distractions in the digital age. And these have a massive impact on Creativity. For me, it's really important for me to switch off and focus on creating, rather than trying to multitask. But, as an independent artist, you also have to promote and release and do all the management too. So, the actual creativity comes in waves. Can you tell us what your present and future projects are? I'm working on the next EP and one-other collaboration with a local artist. These releases will cross cultures and more genres. I've also created a lot more new material since lockdown, with my new solo live-loop set up.
