INTERVIEW: Dj Asscar

Chromatic mag sat down with Dj Asscar ahead of her latest record. Lets find out what makes her tick?

Can you tell us a little about your experience and your background in the music business?

"I have always been a music lover since I was a little kid, when I first got my own computer I started to search for all different kinds of music, that's when I first started listening to electronic music. When I then turned 18 I started going out to underground clubs in Stockholm, Sweden. That's where the passion started and I soon after started DJing for a few gigs around Stockholm, I stopped to fully focus on studies and then moved to Berlin in 2015 which deepened my passion and I took a short music production course online. It wasn't until last year I started producing for real and that became my latest release."

Where are you from? do you feel that has a big impact on your sound?

"I'm born and raised in Stockholm with roots from Morocco. I definitely think the broad cultural upbringing and my past years in Berlin made me more open minded and playful in my sound. I'm very adaptable and see myself doing all kinds of music in the future."

What artists and genres do you enjoy most right now?

"It's summer, I want to listen to fun music. I'm currently listening to a lot of euro dance tracks from the early 2000s and upbeat house."

What is the story behind your new release? how did it come together?

"I had been through a bad case of depression last year, seeking some solace I found an old Ableton project that I had fully given up on, my only song that I made a few years ago. I decided to rework it which then became "DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU". I was inspired by all the misfortunes in my life, especially experiences in the Berlin dating scene. I enjoy self-deprecating humor and to combine that with music gave me some sort of purpose."

Has your sound changed a lot in recent years?

"Well, I'm just in the beginning of my musical journey, but I do expect my sound to change a lot in the future. I like to experiment and I do like all sorts of music, so we shall see!"

Do you feel you can have a more experimental sound in the modern scene?

"Definitely! I think, at the moment, people are so open minded when it comes to music. I don't think there are such things as set genres anymore, we can combine different genres and come up with something completely new which is exciting!"

We all know that the digital revolution has affected sales, but has it affected creativity?

"I don't think it has, I think it has done the opposite. My set-up is pretty basic and without technology I wouldn't be able to produce music without the means to rent a proper studio. Music production is really accessible to most people which creates more output and more inspiration to fuel creativity!"

Can you tell us what's next for you?

"I'm going to be travelling this winter (escaping the gloomy Berlin winter) which will give me loads of inspiration for my next EP, which I already have ideas for. I will also take a little more time to evolve in DJ'ing so I can start doing some hybrid sets, would love to be able to perform my music live!
