Actualizado: 8 jul 2021

Emy Perez creates music that works in all environments and transcends genres. Her openness to a wide range of sounds is what has made her a widely loved favorite, but also someone who operates in her own parallel musical world. We had a chance to talk to her, so enjoy your reading and hear about her upcoming single ‘Zoom Zoom’!

Hi Emy! Welcome to Chromatic Club - how are you today?

I’m doing amazing! Thank you! Hope you are well :) Can you tell us a little about your experience getting into music? Where are you from and how did you get into music?

I’m from a little country in Latin America called Venezuela. I got into music by the age of 7, although I had always danced and sung, my school teacher Ana Cristina was the person that got me into the CantaClaro music competition, and from that moment on I was hooked! I won the nationals, performed with numerous bands and then started to open for big artists in my own country until I got scouted by an A&R from the US. I’ve had the chance to work with amazing artists, written songs that have transcended time, seen the beautiful and ugly side of the music industry and now it’s my time to experience the artist life first hand. I’ve never been wiser or readier than now! You have worked with some of the world’s most incredible writers & producers and created some massive hits! What was your best experience to date?

There are so many, but there’s one very dear to my heart. The one that makes me smile the most has to be working with Willy William for a whole week in Amsterdam, and on the very last day in the last 15 minutes, we wrote one of the best songs I’ve ever written! To top it all of, we had the pleasure of having Will I Am jump on it… The song isn’t even out yet, but after having had an 8 year hiatus, it felt like the biggest win. Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and life in general)? And how have they affected your sound?

Wow… I get inspiration from any type of music, but I do have my favourites! Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Prince, George Michael, Soledad Bravo, Mecano, Celia Cruz, Hector Lavoe, Incubus, Ruben Blades, Nirvana and No Doubt. This eclectic bunch, in no particular order, saw me grow up and I think you can hear a little bit of each in my sound. How would you define your sound?

My sound is thick and sultry with a little bit of cheeky. It’s a fiery twang of emotions that takes you on a trip through a life well lived. How has your sound evolved so far?

I went from Folkloric to Rock to Pop to Reggaeton! It’s been super hard to find something I loved this much, since I was blessed with the ability to write and sing pretty much anything. Right now, this is my true love and where my passion lies, who knows what the future brings!? 😂 Tell us about your upcoming single 'Zoom Zoom'? What is the meaning behind it, and how was the experience working with Dutch producer DFRNS?

'Zoom Zoom' is an ode to the strong power queens out there who deal with a bad man in a marriage or a bad relationship to then get cheated on, but instead of falling apart, decide to rise above it all. Instead of crying, she’ll max his credit card until he does!

Working with DFRNS is a laugh! He’s so talented and easy going and he really turned the whole song around, since I had actually written it a year ago and didn’t know which direction to take it in. He is a true pleasure to work with and my partner in crime!

Tell us a little bit about your label BB Music Group. How did you get started with it and what is the idea behind the label?

It’s a label by musicians for musicians, founded by my boyfriend - amazing rapper, CEO and business entrepreneur Amerildo de Krijger. We strive to be the true Robin Hoods of this industry by giving artists back their power. The need arose out of sympathy for all songwriters, artists and producers out there who get pushed aside by labels/artists, undervalued and mistreated, even though we create the songs people love. It’s time to stand up and give them the platform they need! What artists are you interested in these days?

I’m into goosebumps, if you give me them goosebumps, I’m hooked! How are you living the current situation because of COVID? Has your work affected you a lot?

It’s either the studio or office for me. We’re building an empire at home come rain, come shine, so other than less travelling and less face to face sessions, not really! It’s only fuelled our hunger to create and build this dream. What projects are you working on right now?

The label takes up a lot of my time, but I manage to create and write weekly. Have so many projects on the go, you wouldn’t believe! I have another 10 releases this year and I can’t wait to share them with you! What do you think about the last tribes on earth that still live in the old fashioned way, disconnected from the modern world? Would you be interested to experience life like that!?

I would love to go see the Yanomami’s in Venezuela and live there for a few months in the most wondrous and untamed bits of the Amazon forrest! My family has ties to the Yanomami’s and it’s definitely on my bucket list! Any final comments for our readers?

Like Tony Robbins says: Things don’t happen to you, they happen for you! So, live it up and be the best version of yourself everyday! Mad love and thanks for your time.
