INTERVIEW: MARCELO DEMARCO

MARCELO DEMARCO creates music that works in all settings and transcends genres. His openness to a wide range of sound is what has both made him a widely loved favourite, but also someone who operates in his own parallel musical world. We had a chance to talk to him, so enjoy your reading and check out his latest releases.

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music?

I was born in Montevideo, from an italian family hence my name and I started with the music while I was at the University of Law back in Uruguay on the early nineties. At the beginning I was just promoting some Rave parties with a few friends. After my first travel to Europe around 1995 I ended in Ibiza and I decided to start djing myself so got a few records and thats how the story begins. How is your sound evolving? What artists and genres do you enjoy mixing right now?

My sound has changed during this so many years, I remember the first records I played were Psychedelic Trance then went to a stage of

loving Hard House before moving into Techno which is the only thing I enjoy playing nowadays. How do you feel that your music influences or impacts your listeners?

I think thats every artist dream, the whole purpose of creating some kind of art is to be enjoyed by the public and if on top of that my music manage to influence people in any way then my work is done. What projects are you working on right now? What can you tell us about your last job?

At the moment I am working on a track that is pushing my boundaries toward the hard side of Techno and I am enjoying the challenge. My last work was a collaboration with Edahi that was released on Suro records and its currently on the Beatport Techno hype chart. We are very happy with the result as wasn´t a typical techno track but a fusion of sounds that was a big bet but ended being received with enthusiasm by media and sales, with great reviews from DJ MAG and Mixmag named it the track of the Autumm season. Where are you and what have you been doing now?

I am based in Ibiza and the nightlife has been very scarce around here so I spent a lot of time in my studio producing and thats is something I love doing so not bad at all. Has that sound changed a lot in recent years? What is your musical criteria?

I noticed a shift towards faster bpm and harder sounds specially in Techno and I like it not sure if thats just a momentarily trend but I am ready to evolve as long as I keep on liking it because change is inevitable.

Do you feel safe now to play a more experimental sound?

I believe that djs that play safe are boring but I don´t feel the need to play an experimental sound, just whatever I like and feel like playing at that precise moment. We all know that the digital revolution has affected sales, but has it affected creativity?

Not sure if has affected creativity but surely has affected quality, anybody can release music nowadays and thats not entirely negative but it does produce a huge amount of poorly produced music although also gives a lot of very creative people the right tools to work, there are millions of talented artists bringing excellent tracks but you need to find them among an endless ocean of mediocrity Can you tell us what your present and future projects are?

At the moment I am focused on keeping my productions steady and reaching to a wider audience and my future project is to start the events promotion with the synergy from my Record Label ¨Suro¨ and ¨The Circle¨ that is my own promoting channel that has been on stand by since the beggining of the pandemic.
