INTERVIEW: Marian Flow

We had the pleasure of interviewing Marien Flow and this was the result.

Can you tell us a little about your experience?

I started in 99 with a residency at the legendary Bunker in Copacabana. It was the beginning of the electronic scene in Brazil and not so many females DJs. In 2001 I formed a duo with my partner, “Flow & Zeo”. We played together for 20 years around the globe at big festivals like Love Parade, Rock in Rio, Fusion, Subsonic, Tomorrowland… and released more than 100 tracks on labels such as Get Physical, Great Stuff, Katermukke…

Since last year I began the adventure with my solo career again, and have already released 3 Eps! I also work on my side project Fluyd that I recently reached the top charts on Beatport with, and started my new label Music is Magic.

I’ve did 2 international tours lately, and feel blessed to do what I love working with music and connecting people.

Where are you from/how did you get into music?

Im from Rio de Janeiro – Brasil. I got a lot of inspiration after finishing college of Marketing and living in New York in 2007. I’ve also studied art / design at SVA and went to concerts like Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method, Daft Punk a lot. When I discovered clubs like Limelight and The tunnel I fell in love with electronic music, start mixing while working at a cinema, and in 99 I finally started playing as a DJ.

How is your sound evolving?

I like to elevate the frequencies through music, so I play tracks with happy feelings and grooves to dance… with Fluyd I’ve been playing in the Ecstatic Dance movement, Cacau ceremonies and Yoga events… starting with healing frequencies, mantras, going in a journey from organic, afro to psy trance…I really get to explore a different side of music which is a lot of fun and very rewarding.

What artists and genres do you like to mix at the moment?

I mix mostly in the style of House / Minimal Deep Tech and love artists like Saison, Hannah Wants, Jay De Lys, Dennis Cruz and Joe Vanditti.

When I move more in the genres of Organic / Afro House I usually play tracks from artists such as, Lost Desert, Sebastien Leger, Volen Sentir, Tim Green and the brazilian friends Maz, Antdot and Curol.

How do you feel your music influences or impacts your listeners?

Music is Magic! Vibrates and heal. When I’m playing I feel like we are all one and thru the music I touch their hearts, body and soul. It’s a universal language.

What can you tell us about your latest release?

Roulette Of Life EP is a partnership with Avellar and we bring 2 Deep House original tracks. Roulette of Life captures the essence of life's unpredictability with its intricate melodies and driving rhythms. Groove and fat bassline that makes you move! This track promise to captivate listeners and energize dance floors worldwide.

"House Off Cards" is a unique blend of house, jazz, and soul. It features a wide array of organic instruments, creating a rich and warm sound with a touch of analog nostalgia. The vocals in the track are real and heartfelt, with subtle effects that add to the climactic moments of the song. The essence of "House Off Cards" lies in its ability to bring both lightness and swing to the dancefloor. It has a captivating energy that will get people moving, while also offering a reflective and introspective experience.

Has your sound changed much in recent years?

I think we are in constant evolution, the world is always spinning and I try to follow this flow without loosing the concept and doing everything with love. When I started it was basically 4 genres and now there are many genres and sub genres, so I search many different styles to choose the tracks that I connect with and build a story during each set.

What is your musical criteria?

I think there is good music in all styles. There are many new good producers and also the renown ones. I try to balance new tracks with some classics during my sets.

Do you feel confident now to play a more experimental sound?

Yes! As Marian Flow I’ve been playing more House (deep/tech) and Minimal and with my side project Fluyd I’ve been testing new frequencies and playing xamanic percussions, handpan, singing mantras, focus on healing songs.

We all know that the digital revolution has affected sales, but has it affected creativity?

I think now we have more tools to produce, there will always be new technologies and we have to use them in our favor, to be more creative.

Can you tell us what your future projects are?

Im planning to build a base in Europe to play more around the world, discovering new places, exploring new cultures, making new fans and friends. Im also teaching the Djs of the new generation at Aimec – Music School. I like to support the newcomers. My label Music is Magic is receiving demos and I’m planning the next releases. I have 2 tracks ready that I produced in collab with Indians (Yawanawá and Huni Kuin), Pedro Igel , Avellar, and we are organizing showcases balancing the spiritual, mystic side with the party mood. As Marian Flow im finishing new tracks and have the next release “Break The Matrix” ready to be out in September at D-edge Records
