Paradoks creates music that works in all settings and transcends genres. His openness to a wide range of sound is what has both made him a widely loved favourite, but also someone who operates in his own parallel musical world. We had a chance to talk to him, so enjoy your reading and check out his latest releases.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background? Where are you from / how did you get into music?
I’m Belgian born and Swiss naturalized. I got into music by teaching myself the piano. A few years later, I got really into electronic music and impressed by the infinite creative possibilities of making music on a computer. Ever since, I left the piano aside but the melodies stayed and shaped my sound into what it is nowadays.
I feel that the underground scene will continue to persist. Do you think we can go back to ‘normal’ events and festivals?
Yes, I have a feeling that this will all be over soon. First, we will start with restricted parties and will probably need negative tests all the time. But slowly this will transition into parties the way they used to be. I really hope so!
How is your sound evolving? What artists and genres are you enjoying mixing right now?
Since the pandemic, my sound got even more melodic. Since there were no parties, I felt like making more listening friendly music, however still keeping a dance edge to it so they can still be playable when the parties come back. Therefore, I still make melodic techno, with a bigger emphasis on the melodic nowadays. There are a lot of great artists whose music I really like to play such as Colyn, Moonwalk, Hidden Empire, Township Rebellion to name a few.
How do you feel your music influences or impacts your listeners?
I aim to share my own emotions with the listener and bring them a bit into my vision of the world. My songs are dynamic and best enjoyed through movement, whether it is dancing or driving or walking. I’m trying to find a balance between creating a feeling of determination and energy, but also give meaning to the day.
What projects are you working on at the moment?
I didn’t have much time to make music at the moment as I am also currently enrolled in a master’s degree in entrepreneurship and innovation since the start of the pandemic. But I still took the time to produce for a few important projects, that I can’t reveal just yet.
What pisses you off?
I’m a “real” person. Therefore, I really can’t stand when people lie to me or when people will say anything to please you or others, without it being genuine.
Generally, these are very obvious things and I make sure they know that I know. I also tend to be a bit tense when I am very hungry or really sleep deprived. But I’m a nice person overall though! (laughter)
What makes you happy?
Spending quality time with good friends and having either meaningful or hilarious conversations, good food, good weather, nature, riding my motorcycle, team sports (volleyball for example) and playing music when everyone is feeling it. And of course, good music.
Do you have any final words of wisdom?
Trust your gut feeling more than your thoughts, and never stop fighting for what you pursue. I’ve been carving my way alone through this difficult industry for some years now and have gone through a lot of ups and downs, but what I do and the dreams I believe in are worth fighting for.
