Hi Tony, congrats on the release of your latest track 'Elan Vital'! Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind it?
Thanks, I was one day sitting in my studio and was thinking of making a “classic” Tech House track with a middle eastern twist. That was the percussions I created, bits of a vocal and some other elements. It took quite some time to craft it and the end result is Elan Vital.
How did you go about crafting the beat and bass to create the final sound of the track?
I started out with the bass, I wanted to have a simple, catchy and groovy bass. Played around with some patterns and voilà! I liked the final one I came up with. Next up were the drums and I wanted a strong sounding kick.
How do you typically start the production process for a new track? Do you have a specific workflow or approach that you use?
I usually just work from ideas that are stuck in my head or I’ve written on my phone. It’s usually a hook, a melody, or a chord progression. From there, I usually have a set of emotions or story I want to convey. This serves as a foundation and helps set an identity for my track.
Were there any unique or experimental techniques that you used in the production of ‘Elan Vital’? If so, can you tell us about them?
I always apply various production techniques to enhance my tracks, and shape the sound the way I want it to. I also use spatial effects to create a sense of width and depth in the mix. Experimentation and exploration are really important, and I always try new ideas and techniques along the way.
What was the biggest challenge you faced during the production process of ‘Elan Vital’, and how did you overcome it?
The production of Elan Vital went pretty smooth. From the first day I started working on it, all the way through the final touches, I was surprised on how it came all together.
How do you know when a track is finished and ready for release? Do you have any specific criteria or guidelines that you use?
Well, first of all, I check if the final track aligns with my vision, the emotions and mood I want it to convey. It’s important that the track to communicates what it set out to express. Then I usually let it sit for a couple of days and come back to it. I listen to it again and see if I have the same sense of fulfillment. At the end of the day, music is an art form. I always trust my instincts, making necessary adjustments and there will always be a degree of subjectivity involved.
Are there any specific elements of ‘Elan Vital’ that you're particularly proud of, or that you think stand out from your other tracks?
The groove and balance of the drums are my absolute favorite. The way they came out is exactly how I wanted them to. The vocal licks are what stands out from all of my other tracks.
Can you describe the track using 3 words?
A pulsating energetic groovy track.
What do you hope listeners take away from ‘Elan Vital’, and how do you think it fits into the current landscape of electronic dance music?
I’m staying true to my artistic vision, and finding a unique angle to stand out. Not following any fashion or trend, a Tony Kay signature sound pushing the boundaries.
Lastly, what's next for Tony Kay? Can you give us any hints or teases about what you have in the works for future releases?
I’m working on releasing a special track for me. I’m taking it back to my roots in a Tech House way, with a very catchy melody and an infectious beat.
