El dj y productor de San Francisco JP Soul, capo del sello Roam Recordings, sigue siendo tan reconocible como imprevisible. How did you first get into music? And electronic music?

I’ve always had a love for dancing and electronic music is the sound that best reflects the time we live in. I played various instruments in school and in 1988 I started djing high school dances and house parties.

What sounds were you surrounded by growing up and what was the music scene like in San Francisco in the 80s? Were the big alternative musical movements like New Wave and Post Punk happening in San Francisco too, and if so was it the music coming from Europe that people were listening to, or did San Francisco have its own scene?

Growing up in the 80s I was fairly isolated as I lived in a very small town in Western New York. I listened to what was on the radio…alt rock and early hip hop. In college I started listening to industrial and then found the rave scene. I moved to San Francisco in 1998. The sound I was drawn to was variations of house with rave, disco, and psychedelic influences.

What made you want to start making your own music?

As a dj you’re limited to the music you can find and I wanted more than that.

What is your music criterion?

¿Cuál es tu criterio musical? I like music that sounds a bit different (which is always changing), doesn’t have gimmicks, creates a unique mood, and is fun to dance to.

How did you first break into Djing?

I mentioned that I started djing high school dances and house parties but it was in the 90s rave scene that I really got going. I did a mix tape in 1994 for a then popular magazine in Toronto called Transcendencethat gave it a very nice review. Soon after I was getting booked to play around Canada (Toronto area and Vancouver), the Midwest, and Northeast of the US just about every weekend. I also ran a club night for 8 years and played weekly starting in Buffalo and then moving to San Francisco in 1998.

Tell me about your first ever set, do you still remember it vividly?

I vividly remember the first gig when I found my sound. I closed a warehouse party and played a mix of psychedelic disco and deep trippy house. There was snow on the windows from the outside and it was hot and sweaty inside. I can still remember the expressions on peoples faces that morning. Good times.

What was the first idea about did you build the sound of JP Soul? Has that sound changed a lot over recent years? What is your music criterion?

¿Cuál fue la primera idea sobre la que construiste el sonido de JP Soul? ¿Ha cambiado mucho ese sonido en los últimos años? ¿Cuál es tu criterio musical?

The first idea was mostly a reaction to what I had been hearing at the raves I attended. At the time there was so much aggressive music…hard and heavy…fast. I wanted something with a bit more soul and groove…hence my name. Quite honestly I was doing a lot of acid back then thus the desire for a psychedelic sound. This sound got me a lot of closing slots at the time which I love. Over the years I think I’ve refined my sound but the core remains the same.

La primera idea fue principalmente una reacción a lo que había estado escuchando en las raves a las que asistí. En ese momento había mucha música agresiva, dura, pesada y rápida. Quería algo con un poco más de soul y groove… De ahí mi nombre. Honestamente, estaba produciendo un sonido más muy en aquél entonces, de ahí el deseo por un sonido más psicodélico. Este sonido me consiguió solventó la economía durante un tiempo. Con los años, le he ido refinado, pero el núcleo, sigue siendo el mismo.

How would you describe your sound?

Elements of disco, techno, and psychedelic. A little left of center and always for the dance 🙂

How’s your music making approach evolved?

Slowly depending on how you measure time 🙂 Though I think in the last couple years I’ve turned a corner with it starting with my Gone is the Time EP and my debut album Party On. I think I really started to find my sound with these.

Do you often get in the studio with clear ideas and everything well tied or leave something for improvisation and inspiration at the moment? Where do you get most of your aesthetic inspiration? Is it some place, a certain kind of music, other art forms?

I work best when I have an idea to try…a melody in my head, a new technique, a new idea with a piece of gear, etc. It’s usually just a jumping off point and the day usually ends somewhere else. But overall I try to think about what I want to make and where I want to take the sound.

Do you now feel confident to play a more experimental sound? What’s the definition of a more experimental sound?

I have always felt confident with this because I feel I have a strong connection with dancing. So that gives it a framework. Maybe that means it’s not experimental…like you say it’s a difficult thing to tie down.

What can you tell us about Paper Sheds and Dirt Roads? How did the idea come about?

Both tracks on the EP In Memory Of are dedicated to my step father who grew up in a poor neighborhood in Missouri where all the houses were Paper Sheds and the streets were Dirt Roads.

What was your composition criteria?

A good beat with a groove and trippy sounds. Mostly I make music that I would personally enjoy dancing to.

Why did you decide to publish in a label like Emerald & Doreen?

I was first turned on to Emerald & Doreen by Damon Jee’s remix of Syren’s Crypt by Freudenthal, but it was my friend Tom from Sichi Collective that suggested I send them some of my music.

How about the changing music landscape, do you think you have evolved with it? How do you find the scene now?

The music scene always ebbs and flows and there is always a core of people still doing it regardless. I do think it’s an exciting time right now with a lot of innovative music happening.

What’s the thinking behind your new label Roam Recordings?

I wanted to provide and outlet for the music and sound I love. My strategy is simply. I contact artists that have made music that I’ve been playing and ask them to do something for the label. I’ve also been honored to work with a long time friend Jeniluv aka Vulinej of JP & Vulinej. She’s helped me refine the vision and it’s been great to have someone to collaborate with.

Mostly. It has gotten easier the more people hear what we are doing.

Just check out who’s on Roam 🙂 I’m very proud to have been able to have such innovative producers on the label. They are the artists I look up to the most and that I get the most inspiration from.

What were the biggest differences you saw between clubbing in Europe and at home in San Francisco? What was better, and what was worse?

It all comes down to the particular party I think. The music, venue, and overall vibe a promoter puts together can be widely different from party to party. I think most of the time I spend in little pockets of a scene that has those things for which I can relate. I think with music you find those people that you connect with and you spend a lot of your time there. That said I think the fact that the cities are much closer to each other in Europe makes it a lot easier and quicker to find those pockets.

Al final todo se reduce a la fiesta en particular. La música, el lugar y el ambiente que un promotor reúne, pueden ser muy diferentes de una fiesta a otra. Con la música encuentras a las personas adecuadas con las que conectas y pasas mucho tiempo en el mismo barco. Would you like to see the San Francisco electronic music scene grow and develop, or do you think it’s where it should be and would be spoiled if it developed further?

We have a bustling scene in San Francisco. Always have. I don’t think it gets spoiled. There are plenty of events to choose from.

Where’s your favourite place to eat in San Francisco?

That’s a tough one. San Francisco has a lot of great restaurants. I should probably pick a burrito spot because I can’t live without the classic SF burrito but I’m going to pick a restaurant called Chow. I’ve been going there for 20 years and they never disappoint. Comfort food that’s not too fancy or expensive.

House music. I don’t consider what I do to be house music anymore but I did love it.

I make a playlist about every two weeks with music I’ve recently collected. I try to alternate between that and the music I’m working on.

I’m not one to dwell in the past but if I had to pick I would probably travel back to San Francisco about the time I moved here just so I could share a dance with some of the people we have lost through the years.

Very excited about my next release Bacchanal on Roam Recordingscoming out in early 2018. Two original tracks from me with remixes from Hardway Bros, In Flagranti, and Thomass Jackson. I’ve also done a few remixes that I’m excited about for La Dame Noir, Wicked, and Emerald and Doreen. I’ve got another dj mix coming out in December and a few nice gigs in the books – It’s a New Day block party in San Francisco and the Alfresco Festival in Kent stand out. I’ve also been putting together the 2018 release schedule for Roam…some excellent things already planned. Aside from that I’m in the studio working on new material.

Estoy muy entusiasmado con mi próximo lanzamiento: “Bacchanal”, que publicaré en Roam Recordings a principios del 2018. Son dos tracks originales míos con remixes de Hardway Bros, In Flagranti y Thomass Jackson.
