Mondowski dejó Francia hace unos años en busca de una tierra más fértil para la música electrónica, encontrando en Londres el mejor ecosistema para poder desarrollar su música. Una música que siempre ha girado entorno a diversos géneros, y no se ha dejado llevar del todo por ninguno de ellos sino que sigue explorando sus posibilidades a día de hoy. Sus tracks han conseguido resonar en los mejores clubs, llegando a establecerse en auténticos rompepistas. Y si no nos creéis, aquí tenéis la mejor prueba de ello.

How and when have you got interest of the music? And electronic music? I’ve started music quite young, first by playing guitar at 9 or 10. Listened lot of stuff during my teenage years, mainly pop, rock and punk, but electronic taste came later, when I discovered bands like Soulwax or Death In Vegas who were mixing guitars music with synthesizers and drum machines. It was kind of like a bridge for me.

¿Cómo y cuándo te interesaste por la música? Y la música electrónica?

Me empezó a interesar la música cuando era bastante joven, primero tocando la guitarra a los 9 o 10 años. Había escuchado muchas cosas durante mi adolescencia, principalmente pop, rock y punk, pero el gusto electrónico llegó más tarde, cuando descubrí bandas como Soulwax o Death In Vegas, que mezclaban música de guitarras con sintetizadores y cajas de ritmos. Fue un puente para mí.

How about music that’s influenced you heavily and would surprise some people? I don’t know what can surprise people these days, but as far as I can remember I’ve always been listening to different kind of music. There is good stuff everywhere. Just take the good.

¿Qué música te ha influido y llegado a sorprender?

No sé qué puede sorprender a la gente hoy en día, pero por lo que puedo recordar, siempre he estado escuchando diferentes tipos de música. Hay cosas buenas en todas partes y hay que elegir lo mejor.

What’s the first horror film you remember seeing? Were you more drawn to its music or its visuals? Maybe a mix of both? I’m not at all into horror movies, even if I’m really enthousiastic about films and it’s one of my main inspiral source, horror has never been for me. The first one that come might be The Exorcist I think.

¿Cuál es la primera película de terror que recuerdas haber visto? ¿Te sentiste más atraído por su música o sus imágenes, o una mezcla de ambos?

No estoy para nada puesto en las películas de terror. Incluso si me entusiasma alguna película, las de terror difícilmente han sido santo de mi devoción.

Recuerdo que la primera que vi fue El Exorcista, creo.

London has always had a strong underground scene. How would you describe what it was like when you were younger? I’m from France, not UK. Moved in London only 2 years ago, so I have no clue about how it was.

Londres siempre ha tenido una fuerte escena underground en la electrónica. ¿Cómo describirías cómo era cuando eras más joven?

Soy de Francia, no del Reino Unido. Me mudé a Londres hace unos 2 años, así que no tengo mucha idea sobre cómo fue.

What were some seminal records/artists/parties from that time period?

Tell us a little bit about your EP Surfin Hell (Relish) —when it was recorded, what sound you were going for with it, and any other stories behind its songs. I think I’ve started this EP a year ago now. The deal with Relishwas to do 2 Eps, the first one was Klub Psycho, so I did the songs thinking about a ‘Part 2’. On the lead track, I put some guitar on it, for the first time. I really liked the riff and now I’m happy with the result. I will definitely dig in this way and add more “uncoventional” instruments for electronic music.

Cuéntanos un poco acerca de tu EP Surfin Hell (Relish): ¿cuándo se grabó, qué sonido buscabas con él y cualquier otra historia detrás de cada track?

Comencé este EP hace un año. El acuerdo con Relish fue hacer 2 Eps, el primero: Klub Psycho, donde plantee los temas pensando en una segunda parte.

En el track principal, añadí un poco de guitarra, por primera vez. Realmente me gustó el riff, y ahora, con el tiempo, estoy muy contento con el resultado.

Definitivamente, voy a indagar de esta forma, agregando más instrumentos “no convencionales” para la música electrónica.

When did you realize you wanted to make electronic music yourself? What did some of your earliest experiments with production sound like? Actually I had a DAW to produce backing tracks to play guitar on it, and then be able to do some demos on my own. So by “geeking” the software I’ve found virtual synths and it was beautiful, because of endless possibilities and a totally new range of sounds.

¿Cuándo te diste cuenta de que querías hacer música electrónica? ¿Cómo sonaron algunos de tus primeros experimentos con producción?

En realidad, tuve un DAW para producir pistas que acompañaban la guitarra, para luego poder hacer algunas demos por mi cuenta.

Así que e “geekeando” el software encontré sintetizadores virtuales, y aquello fue hermoso,debido a las infinitas posibilidades y a la gama totalmente nueva de sonidos.

What came first Djing or producing? What feels more comfortable for you? Producing was the first. I like both, it’s 2 things totally different.

¿Qué fue primero, Dj o productor? ¿Con qué te sentiste más cómodo?

Producir fue lo primero. Me gustan ambos, pero son dos cosas totalmente diferentes.

How did you first break in to Djing? Probably on Youtube at a mate’s house party (haha)

¿Cómo entraste primero como Dj?

Probablemente en Youtube, en la fiesta de la casa de un compañero (jaja).

Where are you and what have you been doing so far today? At home, it’s rainy so I’m stuck there. Started photography recently, so I’m studying it a lot at the moment.

¿Dónde estás y qué has estado haciendo hasta el día de hoy?

En casa, el día es lluvioso, así que estoy atrapado aquí.

He empezado con la fotografía recientemente, así que también estoy estudiando mucho sobre eso.

What was the first idea about did you build the sound of Mondowski? Has that sound changed a lot over recent years? What is your music criterion?

Yes, obviously it has changed over the years. And I’m pretty sure it’s the same for every Djs/Producers. I’m not even sure if I will do the same thing in the next 2 years. I need to try different things to get myself stimulate. I can be bored very quickly.

¿Cuál fue la primera idea sobre la que construiste el sonido de Mondowski? ¿Ha cambiado mucho ese sonido en los últimos años? ¿Cuál es tu criterio musical?

Sí, obviamente, ha cambiado a lo largo de los años. Y estoy bastante seguro de que sucede lo mismo para todos los Djs / productores.

Ni siquiera estoy seguro de si haré lo mismo en los próximos dos años.

Necesito probar diferentes cosas para estimularme. Puedo aburrirme muy rápido.

How would you describe your sound? I prefer let people to do it.

¿Como describirías tu sonido?

Prefiero dejar que la gente lo describa por sí misma.

Could you describe your creative process – how do you usually go about making a track? It really can start with an ambience, or a sound, like a bass sound or a synth or a drum. And this sound, inspire me to make another one, and inspire me for another one. Then I put everything together and try to get common thread and it’s done. It’s all about ‘collage’ !

¿Podrías describir su proceso creativo? ¿Cómo sueles hacer un track?

Puedo comenzar desde un ambiente, o un sonido concreto, hasta un sonido de bajo, de sintetizador o de tambor. Y una vez elegido el sonido, éste me inspira para hacer otro, otro y otro. Luego añado todo en común, e intento crear un hilo conductor que lo unifique, y listo. ¡A final se trata de ‘collage’!

Do you often get in the studio with clear ideas and everything well tied or leave something for improvisation and inspiration at the moment? It doesn’t really work if I have something in mind before going in studio. But sometimes yes. It’s quite random, there is an infinity of parameters that comes in the process.

¿Sueles ir al estudio con las ideas claras y todo bien atado, o prefieres dejarte algo para la improvisación y la inspiración del momento?

Realmente no funciona si tengo algo en mente antes de ir al estudio. Pero a veces sí. Es bastante aleatorio; hay una infinidad de parámetros y excepciones que aparecen en el proceso creativo.

We all know the digital revolution has affected sales but has it affected creativity? I prefer call it evolution rather than revolution. I’m not sure if it affect creativity as creativity is something we all have in us. But I recknon that can affect massively artists because of money. Beeing a young artist in 2017, unless you’re touring a lot, you have to do a day job to pay the bills. So it affect your time and your mood obviously. I know this can kill an artist.

Todos sabemos que la revolución digital ha afectado a las ventas pero, ¿ha afectado a la creatividad?

Prefiero llamarlo evolución en lugar de revolución, y no estoy seguro de si afecta la creatividad, ya que la creatividad es algo que todos tenemos en nosotros. Pero sí que pude afectar masivamente a los artistas económicamente. Si eres un joven artista en 2017, a menos que estés de gira, tienes que hacer un trabajo diario para pagar las facturas. Por lo tanto, afecta a tu tiempo y a tu estado de ánimo, obviamente. Sé que esto puede llegar a matar a un artista.

We hear you’re a bit of a cold wave fan- what’s your ultimate cold wave track that you could actually get away with playing out? There is a lot ! But Eleven Pound – Watching Trees is one of my all time favorite.

Tell me about your first ever set, do you still remember it vividly? First actual set was in Paris, playing rock music in a pub called Truskel. Fun night.

El primer set que recuerdo fue en París, pinchando música rock en un pub llamado Truskel. Fue una noche divertida.

How about the changing music landscape, do you think you have evolved with it? How do you find the scene now? I like to be out of any scene, breaking the codes. There is a problem where people stop taking any risk in their music, I mean, on 90% of new music has been done a million time before. Even for me. The problem is people are less and less curious about new things, we are living a weird time.

¿Cómo ves el cambiante panorama musical? ¿Crees que ha evolucionado bien? ¿Cómo encuentras la escena ahora?

Me gusta estar fuera de cualquier escena, rompiendo los códigos. Existe un problema por el cual las personas dejan de correr riesgos en la música que producen. Quiero decir, el 90% de la música nueva se ha realizado un millón de veces antes. Incluso en mi caso. El problema es que las personas sienten cada vez menos curiosidad por las cosas nuevas… Estamos viviendo un tiempo extraño.

To you as a person, what is the most important piece of work you have created in your life? I haven’t done it yet !

¡No lo he hecho todavía!

What are you most hungry for in life? Peace and constent bliss.

¿Para qué estás más hambriento en la vida?

Paz, consuelo y felicidad.

What is one deep thought that you have had recently? 

What is the point to do art ? Is it a way to feed an ego and shine in society or is it a self need or natural process for mind ?

¿Cuál es un pensamiento profundo que has tenido recientemente? 

¿Cuál es el punto exacto para crear arte? ¿Es una manera de alimentar un ego y brillar en la sociedad, se trata de una necesidad del yo o más bien de un proceso natural para la mente?

What would be your all-time ultimate venue/festival to play at? It’s all about the crowd and the moment, the place doesn’t matter in my opinion.

¿Cuál sería tu lugar / festival definitivo de todos los tiempos para jugar?

Se trata del público y el momento, el lugar no importa en mi opinión.

Upcoming projects? Yes, working on totally different songs, probably gonna put a band together and see how it goes. Maybe not as Mondowski tho.

Sí, trabajando en tracks totalmente diferentes. Probablemente reuniremos a una banda y veremos cómo funciona. Eso sí, lejos de firmar como Mondowski.
