Mytron & Ofofo have an honest and raising career. Their musical selection and good judgment has dared borders. Their productions and dj sets are a powerful statement of their no holds barred musical approach. We take the opportunity of their upcoming release on the great Canadian label Multi Culti and we interview them.
Hey! Where can we find you right now? How did you start off your day?
M: Alarm clock went off at 8AM, left not much choice, either getting up or trying to go back to sleep. I chose a compromise, stayed in bed for another 15 minutes then got out and checked in at the toilet. Then a little workout, and after breakfast practiced guitar for an hour or so. Had to clean the pots and switches on my amp then, a 1974 Hiwatt. They were cracking so much I simply couldn’t use the amp anymore, but now it’s all working fine again.
O: I just came back from my morning exercise routine at canal St. Martine in Paris
How did your work on "Blauw" start? How did the order arrive?
M: First one track, then another.
O: Our work flow is pretty much the same for every track, I do the drum/rhythm parts with some basic ideas for Arrangement and send over the parts and Jacek does the melody and song structure.
Do you have certain criteria that you work to when producing?
M: catchy, fun to play, groovy.
O: I just put something intuitively together and just watch it take shape after we bounce the files back and forth
What does your studio look like? And what type of hardware/software do you like to work with?
M: My studio is in the bedroom, taking up most of its space. A few 73 clones and tube pres, various compressors (Drawmer 1968, VLA2, WA76, and some vca), to control the peaks but also for coloration, all going into an old school power pc Laptop. Occasionally using the tape machine too (Otari MX5050 iii 8trk), but that’s more for short bits as a sound effect. All hooked up to a Soundtech Series A mixer.
I like to work with hardware, it’s less mouse clicking and involves more listening to the actual sounds. Synthesizers on a lot of the M&O tunes are Juno60, MS20mini, SID station, Grandmother.
O: I got a studio space in Hackney London but I haven’t been abale to use it much since I moved to Paris a few years ago but before the pandemic I would go back and forth every month.
I’m not much of a synth guy, I’m more into sampling/recording and creating loops so that I can use them like Lego pieces. A lot of the M&O drum tracks are from myself recording drum beats or percussion and then edit them into loops and combining with drum machine sounds.
What can you tell us about “Blauw”? What did you want to transmit? What inspired you?
M: The lyrics are in Dutch and say: It is blue and flies through the air. Haha. Anne (von Freyburg) came in when I was trying out some vocal things. I told her to say something into the mic, whatever comes up when she hears the music on the headphones. I controlled the vocoder with the Juno60. First take, bingo.
What has led you to emphasize this album in multiple genres? What draws you to these genres?
M: Versatility is key. No point in narrowing things down too much. A signature sound makes sense but it’s good to avoid too much repetition.
O: I have always considered myself a fusionist, I could never just be in to one style of music.
Since I’m a little kid I was exposed to pop music on the radio, which had so many different styles back in the 60’s/70’s, and also traditional folk music from the former Yugoslavia. Then when I started djing in the early 80’s there were so many different records to play from funk/soul/disco/punk/rock/pop/electronic etc… I was really disappointed when people started playing just one style of music the whole night I found that really boring and still do.
How is Multi Culti's way of working? What have you learned working with this label?
M: that they are very kind and relaxed people. Their approach in music is nicely broad minded.
O: I have met Thomas in Sydney sometime around 2012 and then he booked me a couple of times at Datcha in Montreal and I stayed at his home where he cooked amazing meals for me.
So when he approached me one day for some music for Multi Culti, Jacek and I had just finished some tracks which I thought would work perfect for it… that became the Si Jambo ep.
Now we are at the third ep…
What are you most looking forward to doing when the corona pandemic is over?
M: Playing out of course! And visiting family. My parents moved to Poland last year, they are builing a house there on a piece of land they bought a while ago. It’s in the middle of nowhere. Would be nice to go and see where they live now. My brothers and a cousin still live where I grew up in Germany, Stuttgart that is. Haven’t seen them since I played there with a rock band in March19.
O: Hopefully people will be able to come together again and be less polarised over politics etc…
What makes you happy?
M: being creative, inventing music, recording it and then presenting it either in a live or DJ set. But also getting inspired by another artists work. I love cinema, and also literature and poetry. Not that I’m a specialist or anything, but whenever I find something that really speaks to me it can make me happy for days.
O: Cooking a nice meal for my girlfriend, visiting my mum, going for walks, seeing friends
What projects are you working on at the moment?
M: There’s another EP coming next month on Feines Tier and one more on Multi Culti soon.
Other than that we both busy with other projects too.
Do you have any final words of wisdom?
M: Did you know that when you move a beehive overnight just a few centimeters the bees will be okay with it ? When you move it 50 meters or so they will also have no problem with it. But when you move it 2 meters then they will swarm out the next day, collect pollen, come back and then hoover above the exact place where the hive was supposed to stand and they won’t recognize it even though it’s just 2 meters away ! The will easily find it back 50 meters away, and a few centimeters change are okay too. But if the change is not subtle or drastic they get confused… weird, isn’t it ?!
O: stay off social media as much as you can.

¡Hola chicos! ¿Dónde podemos encontraros ahora mismo? ¿Cómo empezasteis el día?
M: El despertador sonó a las 8 a.m., y no dejó muchas opciones: o me levantaba o volvía a acostarme. Opté por quedarme en cama 15 minutos más, y luego salí y me bañé. Después desayuné, hice un poco de ejercicio y practiqué con la guitarra durante una hora más o menos. Aproveché para limpiar las ollas y los interruptores de mi amplificador, un Hiwatt 1974. Se estaban rompiendo tanto que ya no podía a penas usarlo, pero ahora todo vuelve a funcionar bien.
O: Acabo de regresar de mi rutina de ejercicios matutinos en el canal St. Martine en París.
¿Cómo empezó vuestro trabajo con "Blauw"? ¿Cómo llegó el pedido?
M: Primero un track, luego otro.
O: Nuestro ritmo de trabajo es prácticamente el mismo para cada track, hago las pistas de batería / ritmo con algunas ideas básicas para el arreglo y envío las partes. Jacek luego hace la melodía y la estructura del track.
¿Tiene ciertos criterios con los que trabaja al producir?
M: pegadizo, divertido de mezclar, maravilloso.
O: Simplemente lanzo propuestas intuitivamente y observo cómo va tomando forma después de trabajar con los archivos de un lado a otro.
¿Cómo es vuestro estudio? ¿Y con qué tipo de hardware / software os gusta trabajar?
M: Mi estudio está en el dormitorio, ocupando la mayor parte de su espacio. Unos 73 clones y presiones de tubo, varios compresores (Drawmer 1968, VLA2, WA76 y algunos vca), para controlar los picos, pero también para la coloración, todo ello armado en una computadora portátil old school. Ocasionalmente también uso la máquina de cinta (Otari MX5050 iii 8trk), pero eso es más para bits cortos como efectos de sonido. Y todo ello conectado a un mezclador Soundtech Serie A.
Me gusta trabajar con hardware, es menos dependiente del click con el mouse e implica escuchar más los sonidos reales. Los sintetizadores en muchas de las melodías de M&O son Juno60, MS20mini, SID station, Grandmother.
O: Conseguí un espacio en el estudio en Hackney London, pero no he podido usarlo mucho desde que me mudé a París hace unos años, pero antes de la pandemia, iba y venía todos los meses.
No soy muy aficionado a los sintetizadores, me gusta más el muestreo / grabación y la creación de bucles para poder usarlos como piezas de Lego. Muchas de las pistas de batería de M&O son de mí mismo grabando ritmos de batería o percusión y luego los edito en bucles y combino con sonidos de caja de ritmos.
¿Qué nos podéis contar sobre “Blauw”? ¿Qué queríais transmitir? ¿Qué os inspiró?
M: La palabra es holandesa y dice: azul y vuela por el aire. Jaja. Anne (von Freyburg) entró cuando estaba probando algunas pistas con vocales. Le dije que dijera algo en el micrófono, lo que sea que surja cuando escuche la música en los auriculares. Controlé el vocoder con el Juno60. Primera toma y bingo.
¿Qué os ha llevado a enfatizar este disco en múltiples géneros? ¿Qué os atrae de estos géneros?
M: La versatilidad es la clave. No tiene sentido reducir demasiado las cosas. Un sonido característico tiene sentido, pero es bueno evitar demasiado las repeticiones.
O: Siempre me he considerado un fusionista, nunca podría estar en un solo estilo de música.
Desde que era pequeño estuve expuesto a la música pop de la radio, que tenía tantos estilos diferentes en los años 60/70, y también a la música folclórica tradicional de la ex Yugoslavia. Luego, cuando comencé a pinchar a principios de los 80, había tantos discos diferentes para tocar de funk / soul / disco / punk / rock / pop / electrónica, etc. Encontré eso bastante aburrido y lo sigue siendo
¿Cómo es la forma de trabajar de Multi Culti? ¿Qué habéis aprendido trabajando con este sello?
M: que son gente muy amable y bonica. Su enfoque en la música es muy amplio.
O: Conocí a Thomas en Sydney en algún momento de 2012 y luego me reservó un par de veces en Datcha, en Montreal, donde me quedé en su casa y degusté algunas de sus comidas increíbles.
Así que cuando se acercó a mí un día para pedir música para Multi Culti, Jacek y yo acabábamos de terminar algunas pistas que pensé que funcionarían perfectamente… eso se convirtió en el ep de Si Jambo.
Ahora estamos en el tercer episodio...
¿Qué es lo que más esperáis hacer cuando termine la pandemia del corona?
M: ¡Jugando fuera de curso! Y visitando a la familia. Mis padres se mudaron a Polonia el año pasado, están construyendo una casa allí en un terreno que compraron hace un tiempo. Está en medio de la nada. Sería bueno ir a ver dónde viven ahora. Mis hermanos y un primo todavía viven donde crecí en Alemania, es decir, en Stuttgart. No los he visto desde que toqué allí con una banda de rock el 19 de marzo.
O: Con suerte, la gente podrá reunirse de nuevo y estar menos polarizada sobre política, etc.
¿Qué os hace feliz?
M: ser creativo, inventar música, grabarla y luego presentarla en directo o en un set de DJ. Pero también inspirarse en el trabajo de otros artistas. Amo el cine, y también la literatura y la poesía. No es que sea un especialista ni nada, pero siempre que encuentro algo que realmente me habla puede hacerme feliz durante días.
O: Cocinar una buena comida para mi novia, visitar a mi mamá, salir a caminar, ver amigos
¿En qué proyectos estáis trabajando en este momento?
M: El próximo mes llegará otro EP en Feines Tier y pronto uno más en Multi Culti.
Aparte de eso, ambos también estamos ocupados con otros proyectos.
¿Tenéis algunas palabras finales de sabiduría?
M: ¿Sabías que cuando mueves una colmena durante la noche solo unos centímetros, las abejas estarán bien pese a todo? Cuando lo muevas 50 metros más o menos, tampoco tendrán ningún problema con él. Pero cuando lo mueves 2 metros, saldrán al día siguiente, recolectarán polen, volverán y luego pasarán la aspiradora sobre el lugar exacto donde se suponía que estaba la colmena y no la reconocerán a pesar de que está a solo 2 metros de distancia. Lo encontrarán fácilmente a 50 metros de distancia, y a unos pocos centímetros de cambio también están bien. Pero si el cambio no es sutil o drástico, se confunden... extraño, ¿no?
O: mantente alejado de las redes sociales tanto como puedas
