Quien haya escuchado a los dj, productores y artistas holandeses, Pin Up Club, se habrá dado cuenta de que su música parece que no se solidifique nunca, que sea un fluir de sonidos e impresion es que no parecen quedarse nunca fijas, como un perfume o una visión rápida de un cuerpo en movimiento. Lo habitual es quedarse atrapado en sus notas, perdido en su misterio y en su inmensidad. Y si no nos creen, pasen y lean a una de las mentes más despiertas, insaciables, curiosas y creativas de la electrónica actual.

You're pretty new on our radar, fancy telling us a little bit about yourselves? Who are you and where are you from?

We are Josef van Galen and Jelle Imbos and we met each other about 20 years ago. We both were making music already although our styles were totally different back then, we got inspired mostly by the same artists. Josef was making electronic music blending his hip-hop background with Dj Shadow/Boards of Canada vibed electro and ambient. Jelle was playing in a band as a guitarist and singer, blending his grungy Nirvana influences with Radiohead-like melodies and weirdness. So we started jamming together mixing our musical backgrounds, we called it ‘Space-Rock’ hahaha. In the years after that we wrote a lot of songs together and got acquainted with different genres and sounds. We both were sharpening our own skills at that time. Josef focused more and more on the production side, beats and sound-design. And Jelle was shaping his songwriting skills and ability to write melodies and harmonies. In 2014 Josef started a new project called Pin Up Club and released an EP on Nein Records. Soon after that he asked Jelle to join in on the fun, to add a more melodic depth to the project with a shared dream to take it to the stage.

What's the Pin Up Club sound? Who would you say are your biggest influences and what are you hoping to achieve with your music?

If we talk genres you can say we make trippy leftfield elektronica with some EBM and dark disco influences but some call it Death Disco hahaha. Our influences can be anything ranging from Grunge, Ambient and New Wave Italo to Modern Electronics and Pop but always with a hint of melancholy and an open mind towards sound, structure and combining genres. Bands like The Notwist, Beta band, Weval, Plaid, Boards of Canada, Red Axes ,Vox Low have been or are stil of big influence to us.

How's the Amsterdam music scene? Is there anyone we should be keeping a close eye on?

Amsterdam is a great place for music right now. We’ve seen it go from just bland deephouse and techno everywhere, to people going apeshit over a Syrian wedding singer at the summer festivals or EBM headliners in just five years. There’s a huge scene for the undiscovered genres here now led by organisations such as Redlight Radio, Dekmantel and De School. So much talent arises from this longing for new and strange sounds. Young gun DJ’s like Pieter Jansen, Woody ‘92, Spekki Webu and Oceanic are at the top of their game right now fusing anything from ambient to goa to disco and back. Job Sifre and Dollkraut are at the grungy EBM/Kraut sound front that’s quickly taking over the big stages here.

What were your original aspirations for Pin Up Club? How do you think you're shaping up?

We just wanted to see where the sound would take us both mentally and physically.That is probably why we started realising our dream to make Pin Up Club a live act. To be able to interact with audience like that is just truly magical. So next up will be touring as far as aspirations go and keep on being able to work with labels that give us love and the freedom to do what we do.

Things are actually shaping up quite nicely. We release two EP’s this year and a bunch of remixes, we played DGTL, OHM festival amongst others and will be playing a lot more exciting live shows this year.

Who got you hooked on electronic music?

Jelle: for me the first encounter with electronic music were bands like Portishead and Massive Attack. I loved them mainly because their music could really take you to another place and time, if you know what I mean haha. It opened up a whole new world for me.

Josef: Tough question.. I guess in a way the hook has always been there, growing up with 80’s music and an unnatural love for drum machine beats in late funk and early hip hop. I guess the point of no return for me would have been Prodigy but the desire to make electronic music myself and actually go out and buy my first drum computer would have come from listening to Dj Shadow, Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada on repeat back then.

What is the musical criteria of Pin Up Club?

Jelle: The most important criteria is that our music should come from the heart. If we make a track and we listen to it but don’t feel the vibe, it’s definitely not good enough.

Josef: Yeah we go all in, heart and soul. Also, we are always searching for a specific sound or texture. I try to find life in saturating and distorting things a bit. Sound quality and character is really important to me both as a producer and as a dj.

Tell me about your first ever set, do you still remember it vividly?

Jelle: Our first live set was in a little dark club in our former hometown Delft. The place was packed, a lot of friends were there. It was sweaty and really cool to play our tracks live for the first time.

Josef: Also really f$%#^kin’ scary hahaha.

We all know the digital revolution has affected sales but has it affected creativity?

Josef: I read somewhere that because music is so easily accessible now it forces us to be as good as the music from all times which makes it kinda impossible to stick out. I don’t entirely agree but saw the change from buying records in a shop to actually just browsing thru Spotify playlists happen. Still it doesn’t affect creativity in a negative way i reckon. Truly creative spirits will always find a form to present itself to an audience.

Have you got a favourite track of the year so far?

Josef: Lily Haz ‘Dinosaurs’ blew me out of my socks.

Jelle: Perels’ remix of our track ‘Naoshima’. I hate to say it, but I think it’s better than the original and it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?

Josef: On our third US tour hahaha. I’d love to have an album under our belt by then but still doing our thing together in the studio and on stage.

Jelle: more than one album, I hope. And I have a dream that Pin Up Club evolves into a real live band. I think that will give our music another dimension.

What can we expect to hear from you in the next few months?

We’ve only just released an EP on Phantasm called ‘Naoshima’ with a stellar remix by Perel as mentioned before, next up is our second EP on Bordello a Parigi ‘The Forever Machine’ that’s out by the end of July and two more 12’’ coming later this year.

Any tips for budding or aspiring Djs?

Josef: Play music you really love, not what you think most people would want to hear. And when you play, watch them, observe how they dance or respond to it and use that to decide what you play next.

To you as a person, what is the most important piece of work you have created in your life?

Josef: Wouldn’t call it work but surely the friendships i’ve been blessed with.

Jelle: my son! But if we talk music I think our second EP on Bordello A Parigi “The Forever Machine”is a piece of art I’m really proud of. I think it’s the perfect blend of our musical backgrounds.

What is one deep thought that you’ve had recently?

Josef: Not so much a thought as more of a rule to live by: Smile more, complain less.

Jelle: I always tell my students to never stop chasing your dreams.

What would be your all-time ultimate festival/venue to play at?

Both: Burning Man!!

Do you have any vision or personal predictions about music evolving in the future and its position in the world?

Josef: The trend i’m seeing is a more open-minded festival go-er which is a great thing, basically more curiosity for new music of all tempo’s, genres and origins. More live acts and more cross-over or hybrid sets on festivals and in clubs.

Upcoming Projects?

We can’t talk about it too much but we are in the process of recording an EP for a BIG festival/label that will see the light in 2019 and we plan on playing live a lot!

Cuéntanos un poco sobre vosotros, ¿quiénes sois y de dónde venís?

Somos Josef van Galen y Jelle Imbos y nos conocimos hace unos 20 años. Ambos estábamos haciendo música, aunque nuestros estilos eran totalmente diferentes en aquel entonces, nos inspiramos sobre todo por los mismos artistas. Josef estaba haciendo música electrónica donde mezclaba bases de hip-hop con ambientes vibrantes como los de Dj Shadow o Boards of Canada. Jelle, en cambio, estaba tocando en una banda como guitarrista y cantante, combinando sus melancólicas influencias de Nirvana con melodías y rarezas similares a las que hace Radiohead. Así que comenzamos a improvisar juntos mezclando nuestros fondos musicales, lo llamamos 'Space-Rock' jajaja. En los años posteriores, escribimos muchas canciones juntas y nos familiarizamos con diferentes géneros y sonidos. Ambos estábamos explorando nuestras propias habilidades en ese momento. Josef se centró cada vez más en el lado de la producción, los ritmos y el diseño de sonido. Y Jelle estaba moldeando sus habilidades para escribir canciones y escribir melodías y armonías. En 2014 Josef comenzó un nuevo proyecto llamado Pin Up Club y lanzó un EP en Nein Records. Poco después, le pidió a Jelle que se uniera a la diversión, para agregar una profundidad más melódica al proyecto con un sueño compartido de llevarlo al escenario.

¿Cuál es el sonido de Pin Up Club? ¿Quién diríais que son vuestras mayores influencias y qué esperáis lograr con vuestra música?

Si hablamos de géneros, podemos decir que hacemos electro mezclado con algo de EBM e influencias disco oscuras, pero algunos lo llaman Death Disco, jajaja. Nuestras influencias pueden variar desde el Grunge, Ambient, New Wave u Italo hasta Modern Electronics y Pop, pero siempre con un toque de melancolía y una mente abierta hacia el sonido, la estructura y la combinación de géneros. Las bandas como The Notwist, Beta Band, Weval, Plaid, Boards of Canada, Red Axes, Vox Low han sido o son de gran influencia para nosotros.

¿Cómo se encuentra la escena musical de Amsterdam? ¿Hay alguien a quien deberíamos estar vigilando de cerca?

Amsterdam es un gran lugar para la música en este momento. Lo hemos visto pasar del deephouse al techno, a personas que se portan mal con una cantante de bodas siria en los festivales de verano o cabezas de cartel de EBM en solo cinco años. Hay una gran escena para los géneros no descubiertos que ahora lideran organizaciones como Redlight Radio, Dekmantel y De School. Tanto talento surge de este anhelo de sonidos nuevos y extraños. Jóvenes como Pieter Jansen, Woody '92, Spekki Webu y Oceanic están en la cima, fusionando cualquier cosa, desde ambient hasta goa, disco y viceversa. Job Sifre y Dollkraut están en el frente del sonido EBM / Kraut que rápidamente se está apoderando de los grandes escenarios de aquí.

¿Cuáles fueron vuestras aspiraciones para crear Pin Up Club?

Solo queríamos ver hacia dónde nos llevaría el sonido, tanto mental como físicamente. Esa es probablemente la razón por la que comenzamos a hacer realidad nuestro sueño de hacer de Pin Up Club una actuación en vivo. Poder interactuar con una audiencia así es realmente mágico. Al margen, seguiremos trabajando con sellos que nos den amor y libertad para hacer lo que hacemos. Las cosas se están formando bastante bien. Lanzamos dos EP's este año y un montón de remixes, actuamos en el festival DGTL, OHM entre otros y este año tocaremos en shows en directo mucho más emocionantes.

¿Quién os enganchó con la música electrónica?

Jelle: Para mí, el primer encuentro con la música electrónica fueron bandas como Portishead y Massive Attack. Los amaba principalmente porque su música realmente podría llevarte a otro lugar y tiempo, si sabes a lo que me refiero, jaja. Abrió un mundo completamente nuevo para mí.

Josef: Es una pregunta difícil... Supongo que de alguna manera el anzuelo siempre ha estado ahí, creciendo con la música de los 80 y un amor loco por los ritmos de las baterías en el funk tardío y el hip hop inicial. Supongo que el punto de no retorno para mí hubiera sido Prodigy, pero el deseo de hacer música electrónica y salir a comprar mi primera batería vino de escuchar a Dj Shadow, Aphex Twin y Boards of Canada.

¿Cuál es el criterio musical de Pin Up Club?

Jelle: El criterio más importante es que nuestra música debe venir del corazón. Si hacemos una canción y la escuchamos pero no sentimos el ambiente, no es lo suficientemente buena.

Josef: Eso es, tiene que tocar el corazón y el alma. Además, siempre estamos buscando un sonido o textura específicos. Intento encontrar la vida saturando y distorsionando un poco las cosas. La calidad del sonido y el carácter es realmente importante para mí, tanto como productor como dj.

Cuéntanos sobre vuestro primer set, ¿aún lo recordáis vívidamente?

Jelle: Nuestro primer set en vivo fue en un pequeño club oscuro en nuestra antigua ciudad natal, Delft. El lugar estaba lleno, había muchos amigos allí. Fue sudoroso y genial tocar nuestros temas en vivo por primera vez.

Josef: Fue un f $% # ^ kin 'miedo jajaja.

Todos sabemos que la revolución digital ha afectado las ventas pero ¿ha afectado la creatividad?

Josef: Leí en alguna parte que debido a que la música es tan fácilmente accesible ahora nos obliga a ser tan buenos como la música de todos los tiempos, lo que hace que sea casi imposible destacar. No estoy del todo de acuerdo, pero vi el cambio de comprar discos en una tienda a simplemente navegar a través de las listas de reproducción de Spotify. Creo que todavía no afecta la creatividad de una manera negativa, lo reconozco. Los espíritus verdaderamente creativos siempre encontrarán una forma de presentarse a la audiencia.

¿Dónde os veis dentro de 5 años?

Josef: En nuestra tercera gira por los Estados Unidos, jajaja. Me encantaría tener un álbum en nuestro haber para entonces, pero todavía estamos haciendo nuestro trabajo en el estudio y en el escenario.

Jelle: Más de un álbum, espero. Y tengo el sueño de que Pin Up Club se convierta en una verdadera banda en vivo. Creo que eso le dará a nuestra música otra dimensión.

¿Qué podemos esperar de vosotros en los próximos meses?

Acabamos de lanzar un EP bajo el sello Phantasm llamado 'Naoshima' con un remix estelar de Perel como se mencionó anteriormente, y el siguiente es nuestro segundo EP en Bordello a Parigi 'The Forever Machine', que saldrá a finales de julio. Próximamente aparecerán dos más en 12 '' que llegarán este mismo año.

¿Algún consejo para los aspirantes a DJs?

Josef: Intenta reproducir la música que realmente amas, no la que crees que la mayoría de la gente querría escuchar. Y cuando pinches, míralos, observa cómo bailan o responden y usa eso para decidir qué pinchar a continuación.

Para vosotros como personas, ¿cuál es la obra más importante que habéis creado en vida?

Josef: No lo llamaría trabajo pero seguramente las amistades con las que he sido bendecido.

Jelle: ¡Mi hijo! Pero si hablamos de música, creo que nuestro segundo EP en Bordello A Parigi "The Forever Machine" es una obra de arte de la que estoy muy orgulloso. Creo que es la combinación perfecta de nuestro background musical.

¿Cuál es un pensamiento profundo que has tenido recientemente?

Josef: No tanto un pensamiento como una regla más para vivir: sonríe más, queja menos.

Jelle: Siempre les digo a mis alumnos que nunca dejen de perseguir sus sueños.

¿Cuál sería vuestro mejor festival / lugar para pinchar?

Ambos: Burning Man !!

¿Tiene alguna visión o predicciones personales sobre la evolución de la música en el futuro y su posición en el mundo?

Josef: La tendencia que estoy viendo es un go-er de festival más abierto de mente, que es algo grandioso. Hay más curiosidad por la nueva música de todos los tiempos, géneros y orígenes. Más actuaciones en vivo y más conjuntos cruzados o híbridos entre festivales y clubes.

¿Próximos proyectos?

No podemos hablar mucho de eso, pero estamos en el proceso de grabar un EP para un GRAN festival / sello que verá la luz en 2019 y ¡planeamos tocar en directo!
