The global events industry was the first to close and will be the last to reopen when the pandemic caused by the coronavirus or COVID-19 ends. For most of the companies in this sector, each month has been a matter of survival. That is why a sustainable, profitable and practical solution is needed. This is how tFRWD arises in Austria, where the Austrian virologist Dr. Christoph Steininger from the Med University of Vienna and the founders of tFRWD, Veit-Ander Aichbichler and Hennes Weiss, developed a technical solution that aims to take testing to the next level: create risk-free spaces with a kit where each person can be tested to see if they have the virus or not and get results a little faster.
We spoke with Veit-Ander Aichbichler about this necessary proposal.
How did the idea of carrying out a project of this scale come about?
As Hennes Weiss is himself a festival promotor and manager of an international band he was directly impacted by the lock-downs and restrictions. He realized, that a solution will be needed to give him a chance to survive the next year, as it seemed not probable, that events will be able to take place without a solution.
The reason, why goverments had to shut down events is clear: risk of infection. So testing with highest accuracy seemed the only viable solution.
Do you think that this kit will save the industry of events and shows?
This kit is the only safe & accurate solution available at the moment. Through the DIY functionality descentralized PCR mass testing is now the first time possible, as no trained staff and no on-site testing is needed anymore.
What is the kit made of?
The kit consists of:
A saline solution for the mouth wash.
A transfer tube to “spit” the mouth wash back
A Virus stabilization tube, that enables us to transport the virus without cooling it down.
A transport tube, required to be allowed to transport viruses around.
A digital APP for sample collection and result reporting
Could you briefly explain how this kit is used?
The process is simple:
Scan QR and goto APP
Register with name (we need to report positive cases)
ID yourself with camera (AI will check if everything correct)
Record yourself while testing (important to be able to issue certificates)
Mouth wash with saline solution for 60 sec
Use transfer tube to “spit” mouth wash back into stabilization tube
Seal package and order UPS through APP.
Sample gets collected at your door.

When will it be available on the market?
It is already on the market in Austria since 7 weeks. Next markets will be US, Portugal, Germany, Albania, Italy, India
Through what platforms and stores can we buy it?
At the moment you can buy the kit only in Austria, at BIPA drugstores, in pharmacies and online.
What does the name tFRWD refer to?
We want to use testing proactively to enable events, weddings, gatherings and so on. This is a optimistic way forward. Instead of reacting to the situation we want to take control. That is where the name tFRWD comes from.
What social impact can be achieved through this kit?
Social life is an important part of society. The test enables us to meet people, party, gather, go to fairs, churches and other events safely. The pandemic will come to an end one day, but until then we cannot stop living our lives.
Do you think it would be a way to save the events industry?
We believe, that as long as there is no vaccine or treatment for the Virus, the only way to keep people safe at an event is knowing about their health status with high accuracy. As long as no other reliable tests are in the market, PCR tests remain the only alternative.
Every rapid test we have seen in the last months have an accuracy of 60-85%. And one can imagine: an event with thousands of people, where 15% are tested wrong could result in a disaster.
How long would it take to recover from leisure?
The longer the industry is on hold and can´t earn money, the longer the recovery will take. So we need a solution now.
Will there be hope?
There is always hope and reason for optimism. We as humans will survive in any case and we will come out of the crisis stronger and better prepared. I hope we can help people and communities to experience optimism in the next months.

La industria de eventos globales fue la primera en cerrarse y será la última en reabrirse cuando termine la pandemia provocada por el coronavirus o COVID-19. Para la mayoría de las empresas de este sector, cada mes ha sido una cuestión de supervivencia. Es por eso que se necesita una solución sostenible, rentable y práctica. Es así como en Austria surge tFRWD, donde el virólogo austriaco Dr. Christoph Steininger de la Universidad Med de Viena y los fundadores de tFRWD, Veit-Ander Aichbichler y Hennes Weiss, desarrollaron una solución técnica que tiene como objetivo llevar las pruebas al siguiente nivel: crear espacios libres de riesgos con un kit donde cada persona puede hacerse la prueba de saber si tiene el virus o no y obtener resultados un poco más rápido.
Hablamos con Veit-Ander Aichbichler sobre esta necesaria propuesta.
¿Cómo surgió la idea de llevar a cabo un proyecto de esta envergadura?
Como Hennes Weiss es él mismo un promotor de festivales y gerente de una banda internacional, se vio directamente afectado por los cierres y restricciones. Se dio cuenta de que se necesitaría una solución para darle la oportunidad de sobrevivir el próximo año, ya que no parecía probable que los eventos pudieran ocurrir sin una solución.
La razón por la que los gobiernos tuvieron que cerrar los eventos es bastante clara: riesgo de infección. Por tanto, probar con la máxima precisión parecía la única solución viable.
¿Crees que este kit salvará la industria de eventos y espectáculos?
Este kit es la única solución segura y precisa disponible en este momento. A través del "hazlo tú mismo", las pruebas masivas de PCR descentralizadas son ahora la solución más directa posible, ya que no se necesita personal capacitado ni pruebas in situ.
¿De qué está hecho el kit?
El kit consta de:
- Solución salina para el enjuague bucal.
- Un tubo de transferencia para "escupir" el enjuague bucal
- Un tubo de estabilización de virus, que nos permite transportar el virus sin enfriarlo.
- Un tubo de transporte, necesario para poder transportar virus.
- Una aplicación digital para la recolección de muestras y el informe de resultados.
¿Podrías explicar brevemente cómo se utiliza este kit?
El proceso es simple:
- Escanear QR e ir a la APLICACIÓN
- Regístrese con nombre (necesitamos informar los casos positivos)
- Identifíquese con la cámara (AI comprobará si todo es correcto)
- Grabe usted mismo mientras prueba (importante para poder emitir certificados)
- Enjuague bucal con solución salina durante 60 segundos
- Use el tubo de transferencia para "escupir" el enjuague bucal nuevamente en el tubo de estabilización
- Selle el paquete y solicite UPS a través de la APLICACIÓN.
- La muestra se recoge en su puerta.
- Obtenga el resultado a través de la aplicación o correo electrónico 24 horas después
¿Cuándo estará disponible en el mercado?
Ya está en el mercado de Austria desde hace 7 semanas. Los próximos mercados serán EE. UU., Portugal, Alemania, Albania, Italia, India

Por el momento, puede comprar el kit solo en Austria, en las farmacias BIPA, en farmacias con tienda física y online.
¿A qué se refiere el nombre tFRWD?
Queremos utilizar las pruebas de forma proactiva para permitir eventos, bodas, reuniones, etc. Esta es una forma optimista de avanzar. En lugar de reaccionar ante la situación, queremos tomar el control. De ahí proviene el nombre tFRWD.
¿Qué impacto social se puede lograr con este kit?
La vida social es una parte importante de la sociedad. La prueba nos permite conocer gente, festejar, reunirnos, ir a ferias, iglesias y otros eventos de forma segura. La pandemia llegará a su fin algún día, pero hasta entonces no podemos dejar de vivir nuestras vidas.
¿Crees que sería una forma de salvar la industria de los eventos?
Creemos que mientras no exista una vacuna o tratamiento para el virus, la única manera de mantener a las personas seguras en un evento es conocer su estado de salud con gran precisión. Mientras no haya otras pruebas fiables en el mercado, las pruebas de PCR siguen siendo la única alternativa.
Cada prueba rápida que hemos visto en los últimos meses tiene una precisión del 60 al 85%. Y uno puede imaginarse: un evento con miles de personas, donde el 15% se evalúa mal, podría ser un desastre.
¿Cuánto tiempo tomaría recuperarse del ocio?
Cuanto más tiempo esté en espera la industria y no pueda ganar dinero, más tardará la recuperación. Entonces necesitamos una solución ahora.
¿Habrá esperanza?
Siempre hay esperanza y motivos para el optimismo. Nosotros, como humanos, sobreviviremos en cualquier caso y saldremos de la crisis más fuertes y mejor preparados. Espero que podamos ayudar a las personas y comunidades a experimentar optimismo en los próximos meses.
