Goeran Meyer — “Disconnected” — MYR Records

There is something inherently difficult about making vocal electronic music feel genuinely human. Too often, the voice becomes another layer in the arrangement, polished into submission until whatever personality it once possessed disappears beneath the production. Goeran Meyer's “Disconnected” takes a different route, allowing Johannes Tibursky's unmistakable vocal presence to sit at the centre of a production that remains warm, organic and distinctly club-oriented.
Released through MYR Records as MYR044, Disconnected occupies a comfortable space within organic house, but its appeal extends beyond genre classification. The track is built around a patient rhythmic foundation, with textures that gradually reveal themselves rather than arriving fully formed. Meyer gives the arrangement enough room to breathe, allowing small melodic movements and subtle changes in density to carry the track forward.
Tibursky's contribution is crucial. His voice brings a slight sense of melancholy and introspection to the otherwise fluid electronic framework, connecting the track to a wider songwriting tradition that encompasses post-punk, indie and acoustic music. Rather than treating the vocal as a conventional dance-music hook, Meyer allows it to become part of the track's emotional architecture.
That balance is perhaps the record's greatest strength. “Disconnected” can work on a dancefloor, but it doesn't reduce itself to dancefloor functionality. Its groove remains steady and accessible while the vocal introduces an element of vulnerability that gives the production considerably more depth.
The instrumental version makes this particularly apparent. Without Tibursky's voice, Meyer's arrangement reveals itself as a carefully constructed piece of electronic songwriting in its own right. Organic textures and understated rhythmic details remain prominent, demonstrating that the track was not simply built around a vocal and then dressed in production.
The EP's shorter mixes reinforce this flexibility. Rather than offering a collection of radically different interpretations, Meyer provides variations that allow the central composition to operate in different contexts, from a longer club environment to a more concise listening experience.
This is sophisticated organic house without the genre's more predictable tendencies. There is no need for excessive exoticism or oversized melodic gestures. The production relies instead on warmth, movement and patience.
Disconnected ultimately succeeds because its title becomes almost paradoxical. The music is about emotional distance, yet the combination of Meyer's production and Tibursky's voice creates precisely the opposite sensation. It establishes a connection between electronic rhythm and human expression—and does so without forcing either side to compromise.
