Sydney duo Bohm return to Melbourne label UGENIUS to close out 2024 with their electrifying new EP, ‘Hear The Noise’, adding to their growing sound that fuses the best of melodic house and techno, indie dance and afro house. Following their label debut, ‘Digital Awakening’, in 2023, and their recent remix of Ark Nomads & MESH’s ‘You’, this latest two-track album draws on material from the likes of Einmusika and Act7, showcasing their ability to channel raw dancefloor energy whilst exploring emotional depth and reaffirming their place as one of the city’s most intriguing emerging artists.
We’ve had the pleasure of interviewing them and this has been the result.
What inspired the creation of your new EP, ‘Hear The Noise’? Can you share the journey from idea to completion?
The EP was inspired by the energy we felt after a string of long DJ sets. Both tracks started as grooves we couldn’t stop playing with, and over time, they evolved into fully realized tracks that capture different aspects of our sound.
Your music blends elements from melodic house, techno, indie dance, and afro house. How do you approach merging such diverse styles seamlessly?
We don’t think of genres as boundaries; it’s more about finding sounds that spark something. By focusing on groove and emotion, we let the styles and sounds merge naturally to create something unique. Not every element will be present in every track. Plus, our live sets don’t include only one genre, so we produce with that in mind.
‘Hear The Noise’ captures the “primal connection between music and movement.” Can you elaborate on how you achieve this in the studio?
We usually start with a groove or rhythm—it’s got to move you first. From there, it’s about layering melodies and textures that amplify that feeling and keep the energy flowing throughout the track.
Late-night studio sessions played a significant role in shaping this EP. Do these moments influence your creative output more than daytime sessions?
Absolutely. Night sessions have a different vibe—they’re raw and uninhibited. There’s no rush or distractions, just pure focus, and that’s when the best ideas tend to come through for us.
The title track feels bold and unapologetic. What emotions or experiences drove its creation?
It was about confidence and raw energy—capturing the unfiltered feeling of a packed dance floor where the music takes over, and everyone’s in sync with the groove.
On the flip side, ‘Back To The Wall’ has a more intimate and uplifting vibe. Was it a conscious decision to contrast the two tracks?
It wasn’t planned at first, so it was a natural contrast that emerged. The groove for ‘Back To The Wall’ had a lighter, more reflective energy from the start, and we leaned into that to balance the EP and showcase more of our sound.
How does your experience as marathon DJs translate into your production style?
Long DJ sets are all about pacing and flow. When you play long sets, you learn how to create a journey, and that’s something we bring into the studio. We aim to design our tracks to build tension, evolve, and flow—just like a great set. We also produce with our sets in mind, needing different moods and energy levels for various moments during the set.
The themes of resilience and determination are prominent in ‘Back To The Wall.’ Are these personal reflections or broader inspirations?
It’s a mix of both. The track reflects our journey as artists and the idea of pushing through challenges, but it’s also about creating something relatable for anyone on their own path.
What role do Sydney and Melbourne's music scenes play in shaping your identity as artists?
Sydney gave us our foundation and love for underground music, while Melbourne has been a melting pot of inspiration and growth. Both cities have shaped our sound and outlook in unique ways.
Looking back at 2024, what has been your biggest creative milestone, and how does this EP embody it?
Refining our sound has been the milestone this year—creating music that feels authentic to who we are. The EP captures that evolution and sets the tone for what’s next. In a strong way, the two tracks serve as a transition into our new sound!
