INTERVIEW: DJ DOVE

  • hace 5 días
  • 3 Min. de lectura

With a career spanning over three decades, few artists can speak about evolution with the same level of conviction and purpose. Far from settling into global recognition or chart success, his drive remains rooted in a constant desire to grow, experiment, and stay true to his essence. In an industry defined by rapid change and disposable trends, his vision stands firmly on authenticity as a creative compass, while embracing an enduring “underdog” mentality as both fuel and philosophy.

From his New York upbringing and Cuban heritage to his deep, unwavering connection to underground house music, his sound is shaped by culture, experience, and a lifelong dedication to the craft. His work moves fluidly between deep, soulful, Afro and progressive influences, always guided by emotion and intention rather than expectation.

In this conversation, we explore the mindset behind his longevity, the values that continue to shape his artistry, and the message behind The Underdog—a project conceived not just as a collection of tracks, but as a journey built on creativity, persistence, and purpose.

Your career spans more than three decades. What continues to inspire you creatively after so many years in the industry?

Well the hunger of evolution and the love for this music still inspires me very much. I still feel that I can make an impact and a difference to this ever changing industry.

You've always maintained a strong connection to underground house. What does "authenticity" mean to you in today's scene?

I think authenticity is vital in everything you do especially music. You never want to feel a disconnect so I try my very best to stay connected and monitor every situation I'm exposed to and make my evaluations from there.

Born in New York and raised in a Cuban household, how do cultural rhythms and heritage still influence your productions?

You never forget where you came from and never deny culturally who you are. This industry makes you grow up really quickly so as I've matured as a producer, I truly do my best in creating Latin influenced House Music depending on my mood that way but doing it moreso now which has been so much fun whether it's solo projects or collaborations with producers who are on the same page as myself.

You've achieved chart success and worldwide recognition, yet you still maintain an "underdog" mentality. Why is that mentality important to you?

That mentality will always be in my mind, heart and soul and it also pushes me to do better. There are DJs and producers born every minute and achieve success faster than most. Some have truly put in the work but some have cut corners to get there. Whichever way ones achieve success, having an underdog mentality only justifies it even more for me.

The album The Underdog encompasses genres such as Deep House, Afro House, and Progressive. Was this album designed more for DJs, listeners, or both?

I went into putting together this album absolutely for both the DJs and listeners for the hopes of longevity. Music is so disposal in this present day market and authenticity as well as enticement are the keys in my opinion for a project to succeed long term.

There's a strong emotional arc in the album, especially toward the final tracks. Did you conceive of it as a musical journey rather than simply a collection of songs?

As I approach the same mentality DJing, I also approach producing with the purpose on taking my audience and music buyers on a musical journey so they get the full experience of what I'm putting forth.

If listeners take away a message from The Underdog, what do you hope it will be?

For me the message would be creativity, persistence and consistency are the keys in never underestimating an underdog and can achieve just as much or more than the ones who are constantly in the spotlight. Your time will come when it's meant to happen in it's true divine time.

What do you think?

If you'd like me to focus on a specific issue, let me know and I'll work something out.
