INTERVIEW: Flour

ree

From Naples to the global stage, DJ and producer Flour has quickly established himself as one of the most intriguing new voices in underground techno. Known for blending the drive of hard techno with hypnotic trance-infused textures, he’s carved out a sonic identity that stands apart in today’s scene.

His new EP Visitors, out September 26th on Amelie Lens’ EXHALE, marks his third release on the label following contributions to the Invasion (VA004) and Galattica (VA006) compilations. Described by Flour as “a four-track journey exploring identity and transformation,” the record cements his status as a rising talent to watch, with support already coming from names like Charlotte de Witte, Dyen, SNTS, Caravel, and more.

With previous releases on Rave Alert, Etruria Beat, and Reckless, plus a recent international debut at Sofia’s Yalta Club, Flour’s forward-thinking approach is gaining serious traction worldwide. We caught up with him to talk about the ideas behind Visitors, his creative process, and what lies ahead.

Visitors is your third release with Amelie Lens’ EXHALE. How does this EP differ from your previous releases on the label, and what story did you want to tell with it?

I think I’ve definitely grown a lot technically. I always try to express what’s inside me and my musical vision through my productions, and that’s what connects them in a way. The Visitors EP is the story of a dream I had, based on acceptance and discovering new sides of myself, with each track representing a chapter of that journey.

You’ve described Visitors as “a four-track journey exploring identity and transformation.” Could you expand on what those concepts mean to you personally and musically?

Visitors is entirely based on what’s inside me. It explores identity and transformation because, track by track, I tried to turn the discovery and acceptance of deeper sides of myself into music.

Your sound blends hard techno with trancier and even psytrance-inspired textures. How did you arrive at this unique fusion, and what draws you to these particular elements?

I always try to give my productions a powerful rhythm, and I bring it to life through psytrance sounds. I believe every track has to tell something and producing music is the greatest form of expression an artist can have. That’s why my tracks are inspired by my moods and everything that fascinates me, like the cosmos and everything related to it.

Naples has a strong musical heritage, especially in electronic music. How has your hometown shaped your artistic vision and your approach to techno?

Naples is a city that has produced so many talents over time. I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with my city, but it definitely shaped my path. It’s where I played my first gigs, where I fell in love with this music. It hasn’t influenced my sound that much, but it definitely shaped who I am. It taught me that nothing is given for free here, and if you want something, you have to work hard to earn it.

Since your debut in 2022, you’ve quickly built momentum with releases on labels like Rave Alert, Etruria Beat, Reckless and of course on EXHALE. Looking back, what have been the most defining moments in your journey so far?

I appreciate every single step I’ve taken in this journey, everything I’ve done for myself has been important, but I will never forget the moment Amelie played my track ‘Invasion’, which later became my first release on EXHALE, in Rome at Spazio 900. I was right there in the crowd, and it’s something I’ll never forget. Another unforgettable moment was my debut at Cocoricò in Riccione. It’s a legendary club in Italy, and playing there had always been on my dream list.

Congratulations on your international debut at Yalta Club in Sofia. How did that experience influence you, and how do you see your live sets evolving as your profile grows?

Thank you! I worked hard to make this happen, and I believe a first gig abroad is unforgettable and important for every artist. Stepping into the international scene gave me the chance to expand my vision of this world even further.

With strong support from names like Amelie Lens, Charlotte de Witte, and SNTS, how does it feel about being recognized by such influential figures so early in your career?

Definitely a lot! I think support from these great artists is essential to stand out today. Behind every track, there are nights spent in the studio, sacrifices of fun moments, a lot of study and dedication. So when such important artists choose your music in their sets, it’s the greatest recognition you can get.

Looking ahead, what creative directions or projects are you most excited to explore after Visitors?

With Visitors I’ve set an important mark and direction for my sound, which is always evolving. I’m constantly working on new music. There are many things in the works that I can’t wait to announce. Just a few days ago, another dream of mine came true: the announcement of my gig at RSO in Berlin with EXHALE on November 14, 2025. I can’t wait, it’s going to be unforgettable!
