Skonka stands out as one of the most exciting new-school talents to emerge from the LA underground scene thanks to a wealth of releases and a fruitful gig schedule, including appearances at EDC, Nocturnal Wonderland and more. Having recently released his successful solo debut ‘Purple City’ on parent label Repopulate Mars, he now reveals his first release for spin-off label North Of Neptune.
‘Get It Sexy’ brims with attitude from the get-go, bringing an alluring female vocal to the forefront over a backdrop of thumping drum beats, sub-hits and effects to create a party-y yet mind-blowing affair.
We had the pleasure of interviewing him and this was the result.
Hi Skonka, welcome to Chromatic Club! How has your summer been so far?
My summer has been amazing so far! My focus this summer was to continue fine tuning my craft ,and to collaborate with more artist. I truly feel like my best releases are in front of me, these projects mean a lot to me ,and I’m pretty stoked for people to hear them in the future! I couldn't be more grateful for all the opportunities I got this summer to play out my music at events. All in all, summer 2024 has been lively.
Earlier this year you made your solo debut on Repopulate Mars and now you’ve dropped ‘Get It Sexy’ on their offshoot imprint North Of Neptune.
How do you see your relationship with these labels evolving, and what drew you to them initially?
Our relationship has been carrying well! Starting off the year by being given the opportunity to release a collaboration project with a legend like Lee Foss under his label was huge! Very special thanks to Lee, TheConnect, and the Repopulate Mars team for having me be a part of that project! I've always been a fan of the releases that Repopulate Mars has put out, but to be a part of their catalog is surreal. Having my music released on such a premier label is something that I’ve dreamed about since I first got into producing house music years ago. I’d be thrilled to continue working with them in the future!
‘Get It Sexy’ brings an intriguing blend of chunky drums, sub-hits, and a captivating female vocal. How did you come up with this combination, and what was your process in the studio?
I actually got the idea from a friend to use that vocal in the song ,and I’m happy I did. I basically built the song around that vocal, but also made sure that I wasn’t overusing it to give focus to the beat in the moments where I’d envision people dancing. Anytime I work on music my main goal is to create a good rhythm , groove, and environment where the audience can have a good time.
What message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from ‘Get It Sexy’?
My message with this track is to have a good time and maybe “get it sexy” while doing so.
Performing at massive events like EDC and Nocturnal Wonderland is a huge milestone. How do you prepare for such high-energy sets, and what do you hope to deliver to the crowd?
I prepare by being open minded when hearing new music that is being released or sent to me. I think most listeners ,and festival goers are interested in hearing something they haven’t heard before ,that can still draw out a great vibe. My goal as a DJ is always to make sure that the people attending are enjoying themselves to the fullest.
Can you share a memorable moment from one of your recent gigs? How do such experiences influence your studio work?
I played at Nova in San Diego. That night I was direct support for Deorro ,so the attendance was pretty massive. During my set I played a tune that I was working on at the moment. That specific song has a very dramatic build, and while the build was happening the whole audience began to cheer very loudly. That was probably the loudest response that I’ve gotten from a crowd. It gave me chills! My friend got a video ,and I probably played that video back like 20 times after the show. Anytime I’m in the studio making music ,I think about how I can recreate moments like that when building a song.
Can you share any upcoming projects or releases we should be excited about?
I have a good amount of projects that I am excited for. Some are solo works ,and others are collaborations. My next release will be in October with Angry Dog records titled “Good For Me”. I also have a track I made with Leah Loredo titled “Freak”. That one will be released on Ferris Wheel next year in January! I have much more in the works that I can’t wait to share with everyone soon!
