James Chang - On The Hill EP

DVRST comes back with another debut. Londoner James Chang unsheathes a melodic expanded sound with a 2-track EP

'On The Hill' & 'Penelope' put together an upbeat haunting theme pursued by experimental dub-like sounds.

The label's next debut features Londoner James Chang. With a background in piano, he then turned to music production when he was in his twenties following his audio and music work in his academic studies. The first productions were a mix of ambient pieces and electronic productions that you will feel present as soon as you play the 'On The Hill' EP.

The first track, 'On The Hill', dials up some synth songwriting, the chords coming together to conceptualize a brooding, upbeat theme haunted by dub-like experimental sounds. 'Penelope' is a progressive pad piece originating from a jazz piano chord composition. The sound expanded into a pad melody, while the main synth was much slower to capture all the notes. However, after implementing it, it became clear that it added additional features to the track.

About

Originally from the north west town of Frodsham, James resides in London and has already made a name for himself in the capital, particularly in London whilst also featuring abroad in Malta and Ibiza. James initially got into music through learning the piano from an early age which later developed into music production in his mid 20’s following from his audio and music work in his academic studies. The first few productions were a mix of ambient pieces and electronic productions but later experimented with tech house and techno

On The Hill initially started as tiny bit of composition from a synth which is what you hear from the start. The chords were put together to try and get a haunting theme to it and it was always an intention of mine to make it upbeat and to experiment with some additional dub-like sounds.

Penelope is a feel-good pad progressive piece which all started with a piano jazz chord composition. The sound was expanded on and a pad melody was created from it. Originally the main synth you hear was much slower to capture all of the notes, however after speeding it up it was clear that it added an extra feature to the production.
