Two mighty talents join forces, as Oliver Heldens and Will Clarke rework Sister Sledge’s beyond-iconic disco dancefloor anthem ‘Lost In Music’ for Charlotte de Witte’s Époque label, out October 1st.
de Witte’s Époque imprint ethos (sharing its name with a research project into Belgian nightlife and discotheque culture) is to remake, renew and rediscover dance classics, across a broad spectrum of genres. Charlotte herself has released remakes of Push ‘Universal Nation’ and Scoop ‘Drop It’, plus ANNA’s rework of Niels van Gogh ‘Pulverturm’ on the imprint. Now, Heldens & Clarke step up.
Sister Sledge original: They don’t come any more classic than the Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards penned/produced 1979 funky hunk of joy ‘Lost In Music’, defiantly celebrating both creative self-expression and the communal bliss found on the dancefloor.
‘Sister Sledge’s ‘Lost In Music’ is one of those special disco classics I wanted to rework, especially after doing several collaborations with the legend Nile Rodgers himself, one of my favorite humans on this planet. When I heard Will’s edit, I asked him if he was down for me making it a bit more melodic and soulful (with the piano you hear in the drops now), but that still keeps Will’s raw techno drive and pumping warehouse energy. It’s one of those fresh crossover records that neither of us would’ve ever done this way solo; that’s the beauty of collaboration!’ Oliver Heldens.
Both pioneers in their own lanes, label heads, amassing multi-billions of streams, this is only the second time the two longtime friends Oliver Heldens, Dutch DJ & triple platinum producer, and UK’s DJ/producer/Grammy nominated songwriter Will Clarke have teamed up, so the buzz around this one is already huge, tested out on the road worldwide at their headline shows and festivals.
‘Oliver heard through the grapevine that I had done this edit. He liked it but wanted to put his own spin on it. A couple of weeks and some back and forth later and we had what you hear now. Every time we play this in our sets it just works. It’s an all time classic reimagined for the modern day rave. What more can you ask for eh?’ Will Clarke.
Oliver Heldens & Will Clarke - ‘Lost In Music’: an assertive immersive house beat turns down the disco vibe and ups the modern electro, with subtly processed vocal and distorted synth phrases echoing the original’s choppy guitar. A monster breakdown showcases Joni Sledge’s solo vocal while adding both a soaring build and a stonking drop.
