Padre Guilherme presents Fado [Lux Aeterna Records]

There is something inherently intriguing about taking one of Portugal’s most emotionally loaded musical traditions and placing it inside the architecture of melodic techno. On Fado, Padre Guilherme and Diego Miranda do exactly that, bringing the voice, melancholy and unmistakable timbre of Portuguese fado into a contemporary electronic framework without reducing either side of the equation to a mere aesthetic reference.

Released on Lux Aeterna Records, the two-track EP feels less like a conventional crossover project and more like an attempt to establish a genuine dialogue between cultural memory and modern club music. The result is particularly compelling because the traditional elements are not treated as decorative details. Marta Alves’ fado vocals and Rui Poço’s Portuguese guitar remain central to the emotional identity of the tracks, while the electronic production creates a spacious, hypnotic environment around them.

“Nada Te Perturbe” immediately sets the tone. Built around the centuries-old words of Saint Teresa of Ávila, the track carries a spiritual weight that could easily have become overly solemn. Instead, Padre Guilherme and Diego Miranda translate that message into an electronic language of gradual movement, atmosphere and tension. The Portuguese guitar brings an unmistakably human and historical texture, while Alves’ voice cuts through the production with the kind of emotional directness that fado has always been capable of delivering.

What makes the track work is the contrast. The subject matter speaks about patience, inner peace and an unshakeable faith, while the production operates within the forward momentum of melodic techno. Rather than forcing these two worlds together, the track allows them to coexist. The electronic pulse becomes almost meditative, turning the dancefloor into a space of contemplation rather than simple release.

“30 Moedas De Prata” takes a darker and more socially conscious route. Its central theme — the price of betrayal and the things that cannot be bought — gives the track a considerably heavier emotional foundation. The references to money, fame, power, dignity, friendship and sacrifice feel particularly relevant within a contemporary electronic landscape often obsessed with image and excess.

Again, the Portuguese guitar and vocal performances provide the emotional anchor, while the melodic techno production supplies scale and propulsion. There is a cinematic quality to the arrangement, but the track never loses its connection to its Portuguese roots. Instead of attempting to modernise fado by stripping away its identity, Fado suggests that tradition can remain powerful precisely because it is allowed to evolve.

The EP’s most interesting achievement is therefore conceptual as much as musical. Padre Guilherme and Diego Miranda aren't simply placing fado over techno beats. They are exploring what happens when an intangible cultural heritage encounters contemporary electronic production, and when spiritual and humanist themes are allowed to occupy a club-oriented format.

For Lux Aeterna Records, it is a release that reinforces the label’s interest in electronic music with a deeper sense of purpose. For Padre Guilherme and Diego Miranda, Fado represents a bold extension of their sonic vocabulary. And for listeners, it offers something increasingly rare: electronic music that is melodic and atmospheric, but also rooted in history, identity and meaning.

A fascinating meeting point between Portuguese tradition and modern melodic techno, Fado is at its strongest when it refuses to choose between the past and the present.
