REVIEW: M-High – By My Side [PIV Records]

Known for its funky, groovy house productions and parties, Amsterdam based label PIV Records brings back family artist M-High for his ‘By My Side’ release this September 24th. Since 2019, Marijn has released on Whyostro and Blind Visions, as well as playing the PIV stage at BPM Costa Rica.

With 3 originals and a remix from Jovonn, the package has a lot to offer. Its groovy, with deep bass and skippy percussion. Vocals on the title track add vibe to get the dancefloor moving. My personal favourite on the EP is ’Tomorrow Is Another Day’, its a deeper track but still uptempo.

Marking a pivotal moment in the project, M-High solidifies its place within the dance music arena. The result is an EP: By My Side, as experimental as it is intense and addictive, which takes over oneself like sweet poison, while progressively transporting us, as few producers with a certain fluidity are willing to do. We do not know what the future holds, but we do know that this record is testimony to a turbulent and uncertain present, which will remain in our memory forever. For records like this, we can continue to fight for a better future.

A whole lesson, a way of understanding not only music, but culture, beyond the precariousness that currently prevails, as something expendable, as if music, books or art did not save us. Forget for a moment about this magmatic present, close your eyes and let yourself be carried away by each of the notes that M-High proposes to you.
