REVIEW: Rashid Ajami’s "Never Knew" EP

After Rashid Ajami's stunning Tale & Tone EP 'You Don't Know Me', and a track from TOR's' Tales of Romance 'compilation, he now releases his debut EP on the fledgling TOR label, the three-tracker' I never knew'. Through working with the likes of Maya Jane Coles and Atjazz, The Londoner has built an excellent reputation with releases on Get Physical, Einmusika, Anjunadeep, and Tale & Tone. Here, he continues to offer his exquisite brand of deep house.

"Never Knew EP", his latest EP released on TOR, is an overwhelming narrative. Through solid arrangements and solid programming, this album becomes a vehicle for reverential music that manages to spill out enough of the artist's own ideas to shake off the high era. allowing it to exist in its own right as credible.

Rashid Ajami manages to distill it admirably into an EP that turns out to be listened to carefully from beginning to end.

Altogether, this EP is as experimental as it is intense and addictive, taking over oneself like a sweet poison, while progressively transporting us, as few producers with a certain fluidity are willing to do. We do not know what the future holds, but we do know that this album is testimony to a turbulent and uncertain present, which will remain in our memory forever. For records like this, we can continue to fight for a better future.
