Glasgow based solo artist Gunke returns with new single ‘Mum’ (released via Glasgow DIY label Negative Hope Records), a playfully buoyant indie rock number, which counteracts the darker subject matter discussing the fading embers of a dying relationship, before crashing into a wild ending bringing the lyrical frustration to the forefront.
‘Mum’ follows on from previous single ‘Football’ channeling that coarse 00’s guitar sound, displaying a real penchant for early era The Cribs.
The contrasting pessimistic lyrical content continues the same theme as Gunke takes pessimism to new catchy heights with chant-along chorus: “I don’t think your mum really likes me, but that’s okay ‘cause no one does”.
Gunke is the solo creative efforts of Luc Grindle (Dutch Wine, HEYUP, Moonsoup), aiming to bring out the brighter, more optimistic side of punk rock. Grindle comments on the track: “’Mum’ is all about finding yourself in a position you are unable to escape from and requiring to see difficult situations through to the end. “Despite the more pessimistic lyrical content, I wanted to create something more optimistic for the lyrics to sit on top of. “‘Mum’ was a good release of energy to write during a frustrating and confusing time, it helped me understand what was going on in my life so became a very positive piece to create despite the less hopeful lyrics.” ‘Mum’ was written, performed and mastered by Luc Grindle and mixed by Melissa Brisbane.
