The Balek Band's new LP has been on repeat in our office since we got the promo, we wanted to have a chat with the band and find out a little bit more, their musical influences and how they go about making their music.
Can you tell us a little about your experience and your background in the music business?
There are four of us in the band, with quite different paths. Some come from a music academy while others are mostly self taught. Music is a job for three of us and we all have several bands or projects that we’re involved with.
Dans le groupe nous sommes 4 musiciens avec des parcours bien différents. Certains sont issus du conservatoire et d'autres sont plutôt autodidacte. Pour trois d’entre nous la musique est notre métier. Cependant nous avons tous des approches différentes de ce métier et nous avons tous plusieurs groupes ou projets.
Where are you from? do you feel that has a big impact on your sound?
We’re all from Nantes where we met. This western France city has been a constant source of inspiration. It’s a very alive city and has a great alternative scene, with historical crews working along newcomers, helping each other in a truly positive atmosphere. It’s quite rare to witness that on a medium sized city’s scene. It enables a true network of venues, labels, crews and so on, allowing a very diverse and interesting musical life to happen. Tu put it shortly, Nantes is a city where if you want to avoid partying from thursday to monday straight, you better watch where you’re walking and who you might run into ;)
Nous venons tous de la ville de Nantes où nous nous sommes rencontrés. Cette ville de l’ouest de la France contribue énormément à nourrir notre musique. Nantes est une ville très dynamique sur la scène alternative avec des collectifs anciens comme jeunes qui cohabitent et s’entraident dans une ambiance amicale. C’est assez rare d’observer ça sur la scène d’une ville moyenne comme ça. Ca permet un vrai réseau de lieu, label, salle etc alternatif. Et une proposition musicale très intéressante et importante. Enfin, Nantes c’est la ville ou si tu ne veux faire la fête du jeudi au lundi matin tu as intérêt à faire attention à qui tu croises et où tu marches ;)
What artists and genres do you enjoy most right now?
We’re into so many differents bands and genres. For instance on the rock / kraut rock I would mention Ashinoa, Péniche. And more hybrid / electronic tip i could say AMAMI, Tapan, Ko Shin Moon, The Pilotwings.
On suit énormément de groupes dans des styles très divers. Côté rock/ kraut rock je dirais Ashinoa, Péniche. Côté électronique et hybride je dirais : AMAMI, Tapan, Ko Shin Moon, The Pilotwings.
What is the story behind your new release? how did it come together?
First lockdown brought us in the same place, allowing us to take the time. No need to work for stage acts for a while so we were quite free to work on our first album! This record really gave us a chance to find our own sound and eventually we were almost thankful to be locked because of covid. The album is called “Médecines”, because we conceived it as a cure for the heart, in which we put lots of love energy and passion.
Le premier confinement nous a poussé à nous réunir et nous a permit de prendre le temps. Plus besoin de travailler la scène pour un moment sur nos différents projets, nous étions libre pour travailler notre premier album. Cet album nous a vraiment permis de trouver notre son, et finalement nous étions ravi d’être “bloqué” par le COVID. Cet album s’appelle “Médecines” car on l’a pensé comme un beaume pour le coeur dans lequel on a mit beaucoup d'énergie, d’amour et de passion.
Has your sound changed a lot in recent years?
We’re a quite recent band. Before this album, we had put out an EP on Beauty and the Beat and a split record on Abstrack Records. We had played approximately 5 live acts and had only had one real artistic residency, so our sound has been constantly changin since we first came together.
The album allowed us to set a workflow and aesthetics. Well… the record has 9 tracks, each influenced by different genres! The Balek Band’s sound will always be changing and that’s the fun of it! And music is about having fun.
Notre formation est assez récente. Avant ce premier album nous avions sortis un Ep sur Beauty an The Beat et un split sur Abstrack Records, nous avions joué environ 5 lives et nous avions fait qu’une seul vrai résidence de création. Donc notre son est en constante évolution depuis le début du groupe. Notre dernier album nous a permis de fixer une façon de fonctionner ainsi qu’une esthétique propre. Bon, le disque comporte 9 titres qui vont tous emprunter à différents styles musicaux ! Le son de The Balek Band sera toujours en constante évolution, c’est ça qui nous amuse. Et le plus important dans la musique c’est de s’amuser !
Do you feel you can have a more experimental sound in the modern scene?
The Balek Band really is not our most experimental project. But through the genres coming across in our music, through our hybrid electronic / organic setup i think we may be clearing new grounds. We didn’t invent much, others did before us. What’s unique is our vision of things, it’s 4 unique characters coming together in osmosis through their instruments.
The Balek Band est vraiment pas notre projet le plus expérimental. Cependant, à travers les styles qui se croisent dans notre musique, à travers notre formation hybride électronique/ organique, je pense que nous ouvrons des nouveaux territoires. On pas inventé grand chose, d'autres l’avaient fait avant nous. Ce qui est unique, c’est notre vision des choses, c’est 4 personnalité unique réunit en osmose derrière leurs instruments.
We all know that the digital revolution has affected sales, but has it affected creativity?
It’s quite the opposite actually! Inspiration sources have grown so much. On the other hand it is getting more important not to get lost in all of it. It’s crucial to give yourself time to digest what you took in, to soak into the present moment and do things with heart and passion rather than to seek some kind of fame. Under these conditions, digital revolution is a great asset. Same things goes for sound : digital vs organic, what you really need is not choice but sincerity.
Pas du tout, au contraire ! les sources d’inspirations se sont multipliés. En revanche, il est de plus en plus important de ne pas se perdre dans tout ça. Il est important de prendre des temps de digestion, de s’imprégner dans l’instant présent, et de faire les choses avec le coeur et non pas pour être vu ou apprécié. A ces conditions, il nous semble que les révolutions digital peuvent être un atout. Pour le son idem, il faut prendre dans l’analogique et dans le numérique ce qu’il faut pour avoir quelque chose qui ressemble à l’artiste. Bref il faut de la sincérité.
Can you tell us what's next for you?
We’re on the road this summer after the record came out on Abstrack Records on June 2. After that we’ll work on the live act during a fall residency, and will take on more gigs in venus this winter. Parallel to this we’re already drawing out the lines of our next record!
Après avoir sortie notre album le 2 juin sur Abstrack Records, on file en tournée cet été. Après ça on peaufinera le live dans une résidence cette automne, avant d’enchainer les salles cet hiver. Puis, en parallèle, on commence déjà à dessiner les contours de notre prochain disque !
