Quien haya escuchado al dj, productor y artista berlinés, Freudenthal, se habrá dado cuenta de que su música parece que no se solidifique nunca, que sea un fluir de sonidos e impresiones que no parecen quedarse nunca fijas, como un perfume o una visión rápida de un cuerpo en movimiento. Lo habitual es quedarse atrapado en sus notas, perdido en su misterio y en su inmensidad. Y si no nos creen, pasen y lean a una de las mentes más despiertas, insaciables, curiosas y creativas de la electrónica underground actual.

Me llamo Tommy, y vivo en los suburbios del Berlín Oriental desde finales de los 80.

Además, soy curador, artista conceptual, productor, dj, promotor y amante de los abrazos.

Beepbeep! Freudenthal is one of my favourite aliases speaking of me Tommy from Berlin suburbia, late 80s east Berlin born, german curator, concept artist, producer, dj, promoter, official cat- and cuddle-lover!

¿Cómo y cuándo te llegó tu interés por la música? ¿Y por la música electrónica?

How and when have you got interest of the music? And electronic music?

Mi interés por la música electrónica fue temprano. Diría que empezó cuando yo estudiaba sexto grado. Por entonces tendría cerca de 12 años. Aunque no me enganché tanto a la música techno, como al big beat y la electrónica de aquél momento. Por entonces empecé a tocar instrumentos y recibir clases de guitarra, bajo y batería. El piano nunca fue mi principal devoción. Hasta que algunos años más tarde descubrí mi gran pasión por la música dance, el blues y el rock`n`roll, que a día de hoy siguen siendo una de mis principales influencias.

My interest in electronic music alighted early, I’d say it must have been around that time being in the 6th grade, about 12 years old maybe, that I got hooked up, not so much by technoid music, but very much by the “big beat” and “electronica” hype of that time! Cook, Chembros, etc…Also around that time I started badly wanting to play instruments and picked up lessons in guitars, basses, drums, never was a fan of playing notes so autodidactically learned to play the piano. Some years later I discovered a big passion for vintage dancehall blues and early rocknroll, which still is one of my major influences today.

¿Cuál fue la idea inicial sobre la que inicialmente construiste el sonido de Freudenthal? ¿Ha madurado mucho esa idea a lo largo de estos últimos años? ¿Cuál es tu criterio musical?

What was the first idea about did you build the sound of Freudenthal? Has that sound changed a lot over recent years? What is your music criterion?

En mi caso no se trata de tener un estilo determinado. Por ejemplo, admiro los estilos musicales con una fuerte impronta y sonido. Pero como al final uno recibe tantas influencias de diversos géneros, diría que mi sonido está en desarrollo -y flow- constante.

For me myself it is not so much about one certain sound, all to the tho I admire acts with signature styles and sounds a lot! But as there are so many influences and aspects eminent I’d say my sound is in constant flux and steady development.

¿Cómo definirías tu música?

How would you define your music?

La definiría como un crisol de ideas, motivaciones e intereses. Se tratan de expresiones sonoras que transmiten emociones y tienden a ser pintorescas, y que al final acabo mezclando con una línea más contundente y pistera.

Últimamente, por ejemplo, me encanta jugar con el estilo egipcio / oriental con las escalas y los sonidos. Siempre me alegra aventurarme en multitud de estilos conceptos.

In the moment, maybe a melting pot of ideas, motives, hooks, expressions, majorly sounds and scales that convey emotions or tend to be picturesque in a way, mixed with something of a club sound attitude. Lately I love to play with egyptian / oriental like scales and soundsets. Iam always very happy to feel that fairly venturesome but innovative approaches resonating with the crowd.

¿Sueles meterte en el estudio con las ideas claras y todo bien amarrado o dejas algo para la improvisación y la inspiración del momento?

Do you often get in the studio with clear ideas and everything well tied or leave something for improvisation and inspiration at the moment?

Nunca empiezo a crear nada hasta que no tenga clara la imagen precisa de lo que quiero transmitir. Sin embargo, me encanta aprovechar varios métodos de prueba y error mientras me voy inspirando en influencias y más cosas.

Luego, hay personas que aprecio mucho por la fluidez con la que trabajan, como por ejemplo, el percusionista de estudio, cantante y compositor: James Brook, con quien finalmente encontré mi proyecto de banda: PARDON MOI, y con el cual estoy muy orgulloso de desarrollar. Además, me hace muy feliz hacer bolos a través de mi FEINSTOFF en eventos y localizaciones como el Kater Blau, una vez al mes.

I Am convinced that as more precisely the image of what you want to create is, as better the piece of art is going to become. Nevertheless I love to tap into various methods like trial and error or into other inspirations. Especially inspirational influences from other people I appreciate most directly in the work flow, for example by my studio percussionist or Singer and Songwriter James Brook with whom I finally found my band project “PARDON MOI”. Making music for yourself is wonderful, but bringing people, minds and ideas together is THE thing! Iam happy to do this also in the sense of clubbing, when hosting my “FEINSTOFF” events at locations like Katerblau once in a month

¿Cuáles son tus influencias musicales?

What are your musical influences?

Es una pregunta difícil de responder, ya que son muchas mis influencias. Desde las canciones más tradicionales a los sonidos inéditos más modernos.

That’s a tough question to answer, as it’s a broad range from the most vintage tunes to the most modern unreleased sounds.

¿Crees que tu sonido representa un sector de la población británica, francesa o berlinesa? Y de ser así, ¿cuál sería su edad, sus intereses, género y, en líneas generales, sus obsesiones?

Do you think your sound represents a sector of the British, French or German population? And if so, what would be your age, interests, gender and, in general, their obsessions?

No creo que mi sonido represente a la gente de una nación determinada. Aunque sí creo que podría representar a una comunidad con apegos e ideas particulares. Pienso más a una escala global, o tal vez mejor “sin fronteras”, de gente unida por ideales.

I don’t think my sound represents the people of a certain nation very much. Much more though I think it could represent a growing group people with certain attachments and concepts, thinking more on a global or maybe better “borderless” scale, united by ideals, but let’s not go beyond the scope.

¿Qué nos puedes decir de sellos como Nein o Tici Taci? ¿Dónde has colaborado?

What can you tell us about labels like Nein or Tici Taci. Where had you work?

Admiro mucho el sello Tici Taci y a su capitán: Duncan Gray. Son grandes currantes. Para mí, gracias a ellos, descubrí el estilo chugging británico, hace algunos años. Esto posteriormente me llevó a Nein Records, donde regularmente lanzo tracks y EPs, cosa que les agradezco profundamente, y espero seguir adelante en esta historia de amor.

I admire Tici Taci and Duncans work a lot, it was a true pleasure discovering that british chugging style some years ago. This of course brought me to my residency label “NEIN” where I regularly release tracks and EPs. I deeply have to thank all those involved I am looking forward to the sequel of this love story.

¿Cómo ves la escena electrónica actual? ¿Hay esperanza?

How do you see electronic scene now? Is there hope?

Los tiempos han sido crudos pero veo luz al final del túnel.

Mientras que en el electro comercial lo inundó todo, las subescenas cada vez se han abierto más a estilos diferentes. Estoy contento de formar parte de este desarrollo, contribuyendo con producciones y eventos. Esperemos que las cosas se vayan desarrollando.

Times have been rough but there is light at the end of the tunnel. While electro flooded the mainstream, the subscenes more and more open up for different styles and directions. Iam glad to be part of this development contributing productions and hosting events as I look forward to see things unfolding.

¿Crees que pronto volveremos a tener un panorama en el que los promotores vuelva a amar la música por encima de todo tipo de intereses económicos o esto no hay quien lo arregle?

Do you think that we will have a scene in which promoters back to love music, soon?

Oh, esa es una pregunta muy interesante. El refrán dice “promueve lo que amas “, ¿no? Si la situación actual no siguiera este ideal, cuando se trata de trabajar con agencias, agentes, bookers o promotores, las condiciones serían muy lamentables desde mi punto de vista.

La situación requiere con urgencia un cambio. Así que sí, ¡creo y tengo esperanzas en que la cosa mejore!

Oh that is a very interesting Question. The saying goes “promote what you love” doesn’t it? If the situation today would be not aligned with this ideal, when it comes to agencies, agents, bookers or promoters, it would be a very pitiful condition that in my views urgently requires change. So yes, I think and I do hope so!!!

Quo Vadis, Freudenthal – otra pregunta difícil-. En este momento estoy muy contento recibiendo y trabajando en mis eventos de FEINSTOFF. Por otra parte, tengo muchas ganas de viajar a Marsella para pinchar con la querida La Dame Noir en marzo y julio de 2017. Y hablando de actuar, quiero subrayar que ya se pueden hacer las reservas para nuestros próximos conciertos con mi banda, “PARDON MOI”, cuyos espectáculos funcionan con anticipación especial.

Quo Vadis Freudenthal – another tough question. In the moment I Am very happy hosting and curating my recurring “FEINSTOFF” events. I enjoy regularly kicking out new jams on different labels. Especially I am looking forward to travel to Marseille to play the beloved La Dame Noir in March and July 2017. Speaking of performing, first bookings for our “PARDON MOI” live show already come in and we await these shows with special anticipation.
