INTERVIEW: Cristian Varela

The history of electronic music holds a special place for this Madrileño artist who has played a crucial role in building the Spanish industry as we know it today. Since 1991, Cristian Varela has been at the heart of some of the most important episodes of this evolution, emerging as a true pioneer in the most diverse arts that make up the landscape of this profession today. He was one of the first electronic artists to produce live recordings, to perform using 4 turntables and to play at major events and festivals. He also set up schools and agencies for national and international artists and founded two record labels that have gone on to have a global impact since 1999: Black Codes Experiments and P0RN0GRAPH1C Recordings.

Hey Cristian, thanks so much for speaking to me today. Can you start by telling us a little about your musical experience and background? Where did you grow up and how did you get into music?

Hi, Pleased to meet you.

I grew up in Madrid_Spain in a very artistic entourage because my family is dedicated to the arts for some generations. My Big grand father was a Spanish Opera producer, grand mother a Ballet teacher & Dancer, grand father Radio Director, father Theatre Actor, mother Ballet Teacher and Choreographer, Uncle pianist, cousins, musicians for Walt Disney movies in Spain and my brother Dj & Producers/ Manager…

Now to the present, where are you currently based and what have you been up to recently?

I’m based in London for 6 years now and created my new studio here and organizing my Black Codes Experiments events every 2 months along different cities in UK

(London, Bristol and Bournemouth)

Also working for Roland Instruments UK

How is your sound evolving? What artists do you enjoy mixing and listening to right now?

My sound is more underground and organic Techno. I love to mix and to listen artists like Planetary Assault Systems, Slam, Tensal, Jonas Kopp, Ian Axide, Arnaud Le Texier, Hector Oaks, Regal or something deeper like Abstract Division…

What can you tell us about your last release?

I like very much to release new talents on my Black Codes Experiments labels and to Remix them to enjoy giving my personality to their creations in one track. I can experiment new ways of production and mastering.

Do you think your sound has changed a lot in recent years?

Not that much because I have always respected my essence and my Techno roots.

In terms of the quality of my sound of course now I am very much meticulous.

Do you feel more comfortable playing with more underground, experimental sounds now than you did when you started out?

Same

We all know that the digital revolution has affected sales, but has it affected creativity in your opinion?

Not at all. Creativity is part of ourselves and no matters what technology you are using your magic will be the same.

Looking forwards, can you tell us about any of your upcoming projects?

I am working in my new album for the last 2 years with a very special Electronic Body Music, electro, ambient and Industrial Techno tracks. It’s almost finished!

Anything else you’d like to add before we finish?

Thanks to all my followers to be so special and loyal during these 30 years of career.

Let’s go for the next 30!! And stay tuned with my new 6 SIX turntables Tour!
