"I never start from an idea and when I do I always get a different result, my only leading idea is to critisize what I've just done, I don't like repeating myself, I don't like to recognise myself in what I have already done"

We have the great pleasure of interviewing the big dj and producer Steve Pepe (Manuel Cascone), in full creative effervescence. Recently he has published: "Vivere in diagonale", for the emblematic record label on Inside Out Records, an album hard to describe in words, except maybe for how the compositions make you feel. It is an album that will give a lot to talk about. And if not, come in, read and dance.

Hi Steve! How did you start the day?

You have always stood out in your productions and sets for an eclectic musical discourse, where you were able to unite genres such as Rock, New Wave, Pop and Krautrock.

What attracts you to these genres? Are you musically guided by genres?

I've never followed a genre, I've always had a decontextualized and extemporaneous approach to listening.

What is the musical criterion by which you guide yourself when producing? What inspires you?

I never start from an idea and when I do I always get a different result, my only leading idea is to critisize what I've just done, I don't like repeating myself, I don't like to recognise myself in what I have already done

How was "Vivere in diagonale" born? What can you tell us about each track? What have you wanted to convey with this album?

I wanted to change sound and method, the main turning point was to move from step sequencing to real time sequencing

-for "marcia" I followed a suggestion by my friend Simona Berardi, she told me:"your last album is made of water, now try to do something made of air"

-"Oltraggiosa musica" is a sentence that I read in a poem by Artaud and it is embellished with alex pAd’s electric bass

-"vivere in diagonale" contains lyrics that I captured in a book of Albert Camus and it is embellished with sax by stefano di trapani

-"il diavolo" was a very immediate composition made in a couple of hours and it is embellished with voice by Jonida Prifti

-for "terra" I followed a suggestion of Alicia Carrera, she told me: "try to do something like a tool for DJs"

-"sold" is a track that I didn't want to release because I had the feeling that I was using a predictable method that's why I called it "sold" like I was selling myself

-"spezie" was the first step through something different but still not completely free from the past

How did you get to Inside Out Records? What do you most admire about this unique label?

I didn't know inside out rec as well as I do not know any lables ( :, I didn't know hivern and I didn't know macadam mambo. Constantinos contacted me and I liked his ideas and proposals

How did you previously receive a signing as the Hivern Disc label? How much has his step after him taught you?

I have to thank Andrea Noce for intoducing me to Alicia, Uri and Dani and thank to them for helping me to realize and release "Danza Moderna". After this release one very important thing had changed: now when I work on something new I know almost for sure that it will be released by somebody, after so much music produced in the shadow this new condition is an empatic revolution

What influences have you had on this album?

last summer I listened to a DJ set by Ondula, I was struck by the fact that her proposal was completely disinterested about the direction and the sound that most of the DJs were taking at that time, and I decided that I would try to do the same

What do you expect from what remains of this year 2020? Are you hopeful that the situation will change?

before the end of 2020 i would like to find a house that is not a basement

What other projects are you involved in?

-Nastro (my deciennal experimental collaboration with Francesco Petricca)

-Some track in collaboration with Eva Geist

-Producing the new album of trapcustic (aka Stefano di trapani, demented burrocacaoi etc.)

-And a teather piece called “Klube Taiga” with all my delfines friends Iva Stanisic, Martina Ruggeri, Erica Galli, Federica Santoro, Annamaria Aimone and Luca Brinchi.
